First of all....an amazing show.
I want to add that I have been brutally honest on this website. Some shows are good and some suck. I tell it both ways. Also, I need to eat some crow. I have not been a big JC fan, but he was on. Now to the show...
I attended the show and have listened to the first set so far, again.
Shakedown was good as was miracle and direwolf. Not crazy, but good. Till the morning comes was tight and quite fun. Memphis was well played, good JC. It was a lyrical nightmare for Weir, though. Picasso was really strong thanks to JK. The Big Railroad was the highlight. It was blistering, props to JC and JK.
The second set was awesome. I have not listened to it again, though. Awesome setlist and then totally inspired playing for 2 hours. Even Days Between was tolerable. I can't say enough about this show, but the Hampton magic lives on. If any venue deserves a DarkStar and We bid you goodnight, it is this fine place.

Ok...I have listened to the rest. All of it was well played.
Scarlet and West LA were great. The DarkStar never got tiger but great to hear at Hampton. Masons and Solomon's marbles were tight and hot. The Viola Lee Blues was awesome and then Dark Star out of it. I was floored. The GDTRFB was strong like the whole second set. There was only one encore for a night like this. It was all pretty surreal for me. I think the band felt the excellent energy and they played lights out. JK is the man...its too bad it took 14 years to get him in the band. Oh well...see it while you can.

Sorry...last review.
I had goose bumps during we bid you goodnight. It was that kind of night. I called my wife after the show and told her if this was the last show I ever went to...that I am glad this was it. Well...I will be back to review the Patriot Center. I am expecting less magic, but who care...I was at 2/12/2010.

I've been watching by night and watching by day.
an going to inform you people that what is lacking at
these shows isn't Mr. JG, emotion, better drummers or all the other bitches some people got. i am going to tell you because you need to hear it. It's bitchy ones I am talking to cause it ain't all of you for sure. Who the f#%@ are you, greater than the music? Not. You and your love are whet is missing from the scene. If you are all out of love -stay home- I am pretty sure the band would rather play to 2,000 love filled dead heads then 5,000 angry bastards that are gonna wreck the message and shit in the road. Ya better go practice how to love, you've lost your step and fell out of grace. Grateful Dead Tunes are about love as well as what is NOT love. But it's all about the love, DO YOU GET IT NOW? Love is the ass, grass or gas on this bus, baby. Wanna ride?????

Hit the refresh tab. Bob, you just keep working on that Memphis tune, we love it. It's a masterpiece in the making. Amazing how the recording of When I Paint My Masterpiece the other night showed just what a song can become. Everyone in the Heart of Gold Band was rocking. We love you Bob Dylan, thanks. Ride, ride, ride we just ride. Hi BillO.
FYI A lady once said- you can't take take care of anyone with sarcasm. Air Dude, WTF? I still cry over it, Jerry criers are welcome. Come here.

It sure sounds like the boys are giving it their all,for sure. While I too do not to hear haters post here, it is equally frustrating to hear such kind people who "get it" stoop to these levels. The GD experience is personal and intense. The passion on these boards is evident. Instead of calling people idiots, maybe we should just say "I agree to disagree with you". All haters want to do is get a rise out of people. Be well, family! See you on the bus!!

CG from Wisconsin- great call on telling Big Boy Pete to go screw himself. I laughed my ass off when I read that. Anyway, I was at Charlotte and was curious about the turn out at Hampton? Was there 10,000 there? There was between 6,500-7,500 at Charlotte. As great as this band is, I don't think they are up to arenas or coliseums yet. Give me a low down on tonight's show and how well it is attended. Thanks!

Jonathon, they played last night at the Hampton COLISEUM. Thanks for the laugh.

Hey gaDeuche, glad i made you laugh. There were 10,000 last night. It was close to a sell out. However, a ton of people hit the general admission on the floor, so some of the reserved looked empty. I will give my honest opinion after tonight's show.

I saw the original GD play 10 shows at Hampton over the years, including Warlocks 89. Furthur did not in fact sell out the mothership, but as a result, we were able to get right up front with no hassle for the 2nd set. And even though it as a little sneaky not to get the "Fire" at all, the whole second set was extremely well-played, and from Marbles on, possibly nothing short of masterful. Days Between would have been even more poignant if not for some unconscious blabbing right in the middle of it. They really poured it on for many of the second set jams, and their timing was impeccable - no longer the same band I saw in December. So to all the traditionalists, I suggest you give a closer listen, because some of their playing is on par with anything the old crew ever did. Add to that that we should just be proud of their continuing evolution. My only complaint is that the girls seem bored onstage - they should get more face-time (Bid You Goodnite blows any of the '89 version away). I agree with CG that the Hampton magic continues, and I'm looking forward to the next show...

Wow, It's so interesting for me to read the opinions in this review section and see how much they differ. I've gotta disagree with CG Wisconsin regarding this show. Though there were some good high points in both sets, for me this show was easily the worst of the past four. All the shows have been good, but some are better and have that special X-factor; This show was not one of those. (Also it was not close to a sell out; I checked with the venue and approx. 5,000 tickets were sold)
The show started off strong enough with a good Shakedown St. that ended up being a first set highlight. Miracle was not a great version. 'Til the morning comes was a fun, upbeat, rare song to hear. Bobby managed to really butcher Memphis Blues, forgetting whole chunks of verses. Dire Wolf was good and Picasso Moon was okay. Big Railroad Blues was very inspired and got the place rockin'. However the Two Djinn closer sucked the energy out of the room before set break. Bob motioned to the drummers to pick it up during the "dreams are lies, dreaming is real" finish, and then after the end, visibly frustrated, he took off "pinky" and quickly exited the stage.
Scarlet was fine set two opener, but the West LA Fadeaway was slow and boring. Mason's Children was alright, at least it got things rocking. This is where the show got better. Dark Star> Dear Mr. Fantasy was nice with good jams in both songs.
The quick drums (nobody left the stage) into KSM was hot also.
Days Between was half-baked w/ Bob singing. At that point we really could have used JK doing a Jerry ballad. For example:
Wharf Rat, Comes a Time, or So Many Roads would have been great here. (ATL had Death Don't, AVL had Stella Blue and CHT had China Doll) Viola Lee Blues was good and had people singing along. GDRFB was not so hot. And We Bid You Goodnight was a sweet lullaby to finish off an average show.
This band has the ability to really "bring the thunder", but at the Hampton show Bob was out of kilter all night. It's difficult for the band to deliver a five star performance when one of the key players is having a bad night. At this show the highlights were good, but the lowlights were really bad. I predict that this show will not go down in history as a "special" night. If you compare Hampton to a set where Bob was "on" (Set two ATL for example)
the contrast is striking.

I agree with snash on some points. Miracle, Two Dijin, West LA, and Days between were not landmark versions. My expectations for those songs are not great either. Yes, Bobby had some lyric issues. However, the band was on as a whole and certainly for the meat of that awesome second set. Masons thru We Bid You Goodnight was magical. That is great if you think this was the worst show of the tour...then this tour is really rockin.

Yeah and I can find common ground with CG also, they DID get it going with Mason's and carried that energy through the rest of the set.
I had to skip Fairfax after catching a cold after Hampton and now I'm back home and off the bus. I look forward to reading everyone's thoughts about the remaining shows, so keep those reviews coming! No doubt this band is the best music out there right now. I'll have the stereo turned way up for the live Ithaca broadcast tonight. Have a great tour!

the show was a blast. ist set was good not great but the 2nd set was smoking. Don't compare this band to any thing other than this band. I,ve seen a bunch of shows over the years and the best thing is that the band is still playing this amazing music and the kids are still shakin' their bones.

so many critics why dont you all just enjoy what is going on now instead of fucking worrying about some show you wish you were ideally at. Christ these guy blow my doors off every time i see them no matter whos jammin together. Thank you bob and phil keep rockin ,been here for 35 years always got your back fellas.

There were far more than 5,000 peeps at Hampton. Based upon seeing them at Asbury Park, which was packed to the gills and holds 3,600, I'd say there were at least twice as many peeps at the Coliseum.
SoPhiSamson, Philly
The first set wasn't that great at all. Bobby forget the lycrics to Miracle, John blew his second solo on Till the Morning comes. He either missed the chord of had the wrong effect on but something didn't sound right. Both Phil and Bobby looked over at him. Bobby couldn't remember the words to Memphis Blues if his life depended on it.
The 2nd set was played much better. The DS>Fantasy>KSM>DS>Days Between>Freaking Viola was awesome. The didn't break up the Viola but played it full on. Even though John repeated Bobby's verse on DS and missed his lines in GDTRFB it didn't matter as the jamming was very well played. I was glad to see the energy they had for the 2nd set carried over to DC. Even with the mistakes I would tell anyone to go and see them as they will continue to improve. They have only played a dozen shows so far.

Went to Hampton and Fairfax. With all due respect to Mickey and Billy, Furthur is way better than the Spring 09 lineup. The energy these guys have feels like it did when I got on The Bus in 76. Phil is having the time of his life (should be louder in the mix). Hampton was one of the best shows I've seen in many years.KSM was much anticipated gem, as was Viola. The HelpSlipFranklin at Fairfax was killer.

This is for everyone who reads about the 2010 Furthur Winter tour...maybe years from now. Presently, there is just the California show left. I have listened or seen the whole tour by now. I was at the ridiculous second night at Chicago with the 2 second sets.
I still think this show is the best since the GD ended. I can not stop listening to this show. A lot of the shows were well played, but this one was special. The first set was good, good song selection, not crazy.
However, the second set is the bomb. Its starts with the best scarlet of the tour. The West LA was fine, but the show gets going with a solid Mason's. What makes this show so great is that the second was perfect the way it flowed. Yes, there were some vocal miscues, but Mason's on was one continuous story. The Dark Star almost gets tiger at the end. The Fantasy is played perfectly. A note is not missed on KSM. As stated before...the Days was even tolerable, but thats what happens on these special nights. The Viola was awesome and tight and after one second of it being over, right into Dark Star. The GDTRFB was not the best of the tour, but still continued the flow. The We Bid ....was beautiful. It so capped the perfect second set. The crowd noise before the donor rap was deafening. Phil had to step back and pause 3 times before he could give it. This was not the warlocks, but is was the warlocks show for Furthur. If you buy one furthur CD, buy this show...thats the best advice I can give.
