Felt like a phil and friends show. The dude siging sounded like jerry. Songs mostly first set thought estimated would blow up. Didn't china dark star was great jammy jazzy, stephen in to strawberry fields was good. But still felt like a phil show. Loved it coming down now off some heady chocolate oh yeah went solo for the first time since grab got a ticket in the balcony for 60 on my way in

Phil and Bob looked like they were having a lot of fun up there last night. Phil ws dropping the bombs. Jay really tore up Alabama Getaway, St Stephen. throw in a Strawberry Fields ... Wow. How about that China>UJB tease>Eyes - Jay was ripping. ST Stephen was firing on all cylinders. Would gladly go see these guys again. Bring on Utica. Thought it rocked ! It is amazing to still have these guys playing after all these years !

Wow. I thought this was a great show. I didn't know what to expect after reading the reviews from the 12/9 concert. While there were times where I thought there was no sense of direction, they paled in comparison to the overall quality of the show.

Haters, learn to appreciate. 2 of my pickiest friends were at the show last night, and both blew up my phone with txts about how great the show was. Both were new to this band, and very skeptical. I look forward to hearing it, but I'm bettin it's a good one. Wish I was there, and for those of you who are, and don't appreciate......RETHINK!!!!
And by the way...it AIN'T the Grateful Dead. It is something new, yet familiar...AND WONDERFUL!!!!!!!!!!
East Coasters love to bitch........

Show exceeded my expectations. Great Shakedown opener followed by John lead vocal on Alabama Getaway, hadn't heard that one before as well as Pride of Cucamonga. First set ended nicely with a rousing Music Never Stopped. Second set flowed really well with Dark Star, New Potato, Strawberry Field, St. Stephen, Eleven. Would have like to have heard GDTRFB sandwiched in between NFA with an I Know You Rider encore but I think the band ran out of time, 12AM curfew. I thought there was continueity and all and all a good time had by all.

I have seen every incarnation of post Jerry Dead family. I have to admit, I am very skeptical as I always seem to miss the overall sound coming together. Phil and Friends gets as close because they usually throw caution to the wind and just play with energy. Also, he typically gets different musicians with completely different styles who are great in their own right (Jackie Green, etc).therefore your expectations are not for the Grateful Dead sound, but just fun energy.
Last night was easily the best show I have attended playing Grateful Dead music in 19 years. Jay Ripps! Not only does he have the Jerry chops, but he has his own style that fits in as well. Bobby and Phil were having a downright giddy time. We were in section 101S, so had a great view of the stage action. Lets start with the highlights. Shakedown was a classic. Crazy triple jam in the middle, prior to the main jam. Ending was a bit sloppy but in a fun way. Alabama was absolutely mind bending. Set closing Music was peak 77 form. China-->Eyes was great,The Dark Star-->Strawberry Fields-->St Stephen-->Eleven-->Not Fade was simply unreal. Well played, well sung, jams were intense but full of improv as you could see the guys, especially Phil leading them higher and higher. Post Set close, Phil goes over and hugs Jay as if to say, welcome to the Zone!. Guys, this is a must see ensemble. PLease open your minds to the sound. From a former skeptic, I am all in.

I saw five shows during The Dead's spring tour earlier this year, and although I thoroughly enjoyed them all, I have to say this show was better than any of them. Start to finish the show was full of energy, full of familiar jams but with refreshing new twists. First sets are great but the typical lack of '>'s usually leaves me in eager anticipation of the second set. The second set is always the highlight of any show for me(Dead or otherwise), and this one didn't let me down at all. I always love it when they do something out of the ordinary. I love china>rider as much as anyone but part of me was hoping for something different, and I got my wish. A beautiful transition into eyes of the world that brought a huge smile to my face. Born Cross Eyed had a long free improvisational jam out and as the band slowly began to fade out, Phil ripped out those famous first four notes of what was to be one of the best Dark Star's I have ever heard. Phil's voice was absolutely beautiful on Strawberry Fields. I've always been a sucker for St Stephen>The Eleven, even so I don't think anyone can say this one left them disappointed. The Not Fade Away energized the crowd enough to make them clap and sing all the way through the encore break. Unfortunately at this point it was just after midnight and the GDTRFB was rushed and relatively uninspired, but I can't complain at all after such an amazing set.
As a final note, I just wanted to say if you are going to hate on every show just save your money as well as my pain from reading your thoughtless negative reviews.

Great show, high energy, and surprisingly tight. A few rough spots didn't hurt the overall result. Remember, the Grateful Dead had some off nights. This show only had a few off moments.
Was in row 6 and the sound was fantastic. John K is absolutely the real deal. Saw him in DSO and always wondered why the Dead didn't take him away? Timing is right now and I think this band will end up doing much bigger venues in the next year or two. For someone that's followed the Dead since 1977 (Englishtown was my first show), I think it's a real treat to see them doing so well in this incarnation after all these years. Best post-Jerry band yet.
Some specific comments on this night - anyone know if the Dead ever did China Cat>Eyes of the World? Thought Furthur made that work well. I was hoping for Dark Star>St.Stephen>Not Fade Away>GDTRFB>Not Fade Away to relive Filmore East April 1971, but this came pretty close. Music Never Stopped could have gone a bit longer, but it was really well played.
Naysayers need not show up. Leave the tickets in these great venues for the rest of us!

Talked to a couple infront of us who went to the first two shows and despite all the ney sayers and bobby bashing going on in the rewiews they were quite satisfied with what they saw remember folks these guys are still finding theyre stride, and its NOT JERRY be thankful you can still go, a day will come in the not to distant future when you will be wishing you could go see that lousy show believe me and when that day comes you folk will be the first to complain think youself lucky!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Oh yes Harvey from uconn if its flow your looking for why dont you go jump in a river maybe you will find the flow youre looking for there.Trust me folks last nights performance was awesome, overall great vibe at the show good song choices and all members of band looking like things were going well.Hats go off to Weir whose vocals last night were right on point belting it out in full fashion for all to enjoy. If they can keep up the great work from last night which i have no doubt they will should be a great tour for all involved .Roll on amherst and NH

This show opened with a 12-15 minute Shakedown that was out-freakin-rageous. The show could have stopped right there and it would have been a winner.
I was 5th row, center stage. Quite easily the best jamming I've seen in 20 years of shows. The band's playing was telepathic- especially the exhchanges between Phil & JK. All six played excellent.. Russo is a fantastic fit. Lane is like Animal from the Muppets. JC is a wizard.
Despite the negative critiques (by some) of Mr. Weir's performances as of late, he played his tail off last nite.. some of those classic Bobby riffs from 74-80. And, IMHO, he redeemed himself from years of lyrcical atrocities by ABOSLUTELY NAILING the lyrics in the William Tell Overture... delivering them flawless in 11/8 time!! It reminded me of them all woodsheeding together in that warehouse during '68.
Phil was clearly enjoying himself- smiling at the audience while he sang Dark Star, constantly communicating w/ Bob & John. He playing was inpsired, articulate and powerful.
Many parts of the sets were played the way outstanding. The transition from Chinacat into Eye's was flawless (and totally unexpected- have they done that before?). The Dark Star was a "Dark Star for Dark Star Fanatics"...priceless. St. Stephen captured the best of 69 & 77 with pinpoint precision. Born Cross Eyed & The Eleven were powerhouses. The jams inside Pride of Cucomonga and Alabama Getaway took those tunes into very cool space). I think GDTRFB eneded a little past midnite.
JK's playing & style capture the mood of every tune- the GD are part of his muiscal DNA and it clearly contributes a powerful catalyst to the mix. Was it Nostalgic? Maybe, but they blew each song through the roof and to see Phil smiling, jamming & so transfixed (along w/ the others), I dont much care if its nostalgia, reminiscing or flat-out GD impersonation... it was electrified, pschedelic mastery. And it rocked.
SIX PROUD WALKERS ON THE JINGLEBELL RAINBOW!!!!

To all you haters, critics, and "Deader than thou" fools, I have two things to say to you.
1. Please don't dominate the rap Jack, if you GOT NOTHING NEW TO SAY.
2. Ain't no time to hate.
GREAT show last night. Nothing left to do but SMILE SMILE SMILE~!~!~!~!

My posse represented Vermont heads very well!
what a weird venue! In the middle of suburbia, the chevrolet theater looks like a mall movie theater from the outside. Inside it feels like it was probably truly a state of the art theater back in 1979. What a great show and night this turned out to be.
First set Shakedown to get things going just right. Security turned the other cheek, and people were left to their own devices. Didn't see one person dragged out, very mature crowd, very mature security crew--no cops in sight. Music never stopped to close the set was smokin'!
Second set, from Dark Star on was amazing. From the nightfall of diamonds to the corals sands below! For old timers, they sure played a long time! Show didn't end till 12:15 or so.
Outside the show, there was an awesome new haven pizza bus! Great pizza, long lines. Great pizza!!!
One negative--the nasty nitrus scene outside. People that do balloons and fall on their faces are like school on sunday--no class.
Can't wait for february! have fun in Jersey!

Stop telling people to not post negative reviews. Everybody give your honest opinion. The purpose is to get an overall consensus of how good a show was. There are too many people who think every show is good either because they're too partied up to know the difference, or they just don't know any better to begin with. Everything is subjective. Some people have a more critical ear than others. If you liked it enough to gush, fine. If you thought the show was disappointing, fine. Post your own opinion, and allow everybody else to do the same without lashing out.
ST, New York
Agreed, all should be able to post their opinion. Here is mine: if you thought last night's show was weak, find a new hobby because there is nothing more for you here...I'm sure you can find a younger band that brings the high energy. As for me- I will always be grateful. Last night 100% kept me in the game.

Well so far this page there are 13 positives(with many superlatives), 1 one sentence negative and 1 non-opinion as to last night's show. Based on the first 2 shows it certainly appears that show 2 had tremendous chemistry problems. Since this has happened probably no more than what about a dozen times in ...what...more than 5,000 GD and related shows I will certainly take my chances for Miami and Orlando this spring. Last time Ratdog was here in Boca last November was in my all time top 10. Happy Holidays to all objective heads(and nonobjetive too, I guess). Here's hoping there will be some kind of broadcast(or telecast?) on NYE.

Wow, though I only caught Jerry once and at a young age, I've seen most every group since and I agree that this is top notch stuff. My highlights were the spacey Dark Star which John played brilliantly and the eleven though I was hopin for the William Tell. See you in Asheville!
Bob from Danbury - if it was you & your friends I was beside, nice to meet you & see you next time

I read a review of the 2nd NYC show on Wed. which said the concert was dreadful and Bobby dropped the lyrics on virtually every song. Given that, I slightly modified my expectations for the evening. The first set:
Shakedown!!
Alabama Get Away
Good Morning School Girl
Pride of Cucamunga!!
Loose Lucy
Minglewood!
Music Never Stopped!
This was a very good first set. Shakedown was great. Phil singing Pride was really fun. Minglewood was very strong with a new lyric about San Fran., and Music/Stopped was a great set closer.
Now, I know I am biased and sometimes given to hyperbole on this subject, but simply put, the second set was the best music I have ever heard.
First of all John K is excellent. His guitar was driving many of the songs and jams and I didn't hear him miss a note all night. Vocally he is a huge addition to this band. Easily the strongest vocalist (other than Joanie) since Bobby was in his prime. Speaking of Bobby he looked and sounded great and didn't miss a lyric all night. Phil, who will be 70 in March, was great, and Jeff and Jay were stellar as usual. The jamming in this show was the tightest I've ever seen, with very little meandering, spacing, loss of tempo, etc. So, the second set:
China Cat, perfectly played, strong clear vocals from John K,powerful jam into>
WHAT! Eyes of the World - totally unexpected and blew me away(second best song of the night)>
Born Cross Eyed very well done, feelin groovy>
Dark Star - perfectly and crisply played, with lots of soaring and very good vocals>
Are you kidding me, Strawberry Fields, which blew my mind>
Then the lilting intro to St. Stephen which they of course ripped through to The Eleven - probably my highlight of the night.
Strong set closer of Not Fade Away and then of course an encore of Goin Down the Road.
This was a perfect set list perfectly played. If we get a show in Feb. half as good as this I will be completely satisfied!!!

By far the best Furthur show of the Tri-State Run. My personal favorite song was the Shakedown Street opener. Also the Oakdale is a really nice place to see a concert, as long as you don't get the limited view seats.
