End of era. Had to be there. Good, solid show. Alwyas welcome Sugar Mags sandwich to open and close. Viola Lee out of space was a surprise and well played. Was hoping that the last song would be Bid You Goodnight, but Not Fade Away was a good choice too. If it is the end, it was worth the ride! Thank you!!

I went with some of the same "end of era" feelings Frank expressed. Personally I think they may be up to another brief burst before the end, but this would have been a great show to go out on. First set was unbelievable. Lots of creative stuff going on in and between songs. Despite Bobby's obvious frustration with some of the technical stuff he and Warren were obviously having a good time. Phil seemed to be turned down a bit so I'm looking forward to the recordings. Chimenti was a beast all night and the drums space with drummers from Cheese and two other guys I didn't recognize (anybody?) was just exactly perfect.
But back to the first set. Someone asked me before the show what I was looking forward to hearing and I really couldn't come up with an answer other than to say :Grateful Dead" music. By that I meant that juicy stuff between songs that teases the familiar, but cooks up something new. The opening jam seemed to have notes of Jack Straw, but Sugar Magnolia signaled something special. Both Eyes and Estimated played out nicely, with Loose Lucy adding contrast to what seems like Warren's role "batting clean up" with Loose Lucy at number four in the first set. Nice Friend of the Devil, with Into the Mystic a good choice for the change up. WTF? Eyes>Estimated AND Help>Slip>Frank together in the first set? How do you top that? Well, you get OMSN out of the way early, throw in a full-throttle Shakedown AND China>Rider. On the spot, the only clunkers I heard was a bit of a hiccup shifting in to Rider (I think this is the second full stop before IKYR this year) and after Drums/Space Viola was a fun surprise (did they have unfinished business left over from LA?) but seemed a touch off at times. However, it did make a great set up for the clearly political offering of Morning Dew. Did I mention Drums/Space was my 2nd set highlight? Do I need to mention how pissed off I got when the frat boys who crashed into the "AARP section" in front of the board started yacking over Mickey's delicate intro? I just hope the tapers didn't pick up my screaming at them to STFU (or maybe I do ;-) Either way there was a lot more room to move after that..... If there was any doubt that Morning Dew was chosen for it's political as well as musical impact, Throwing Stones made it clear that Bobby at least came to Rothbury to embrace the environmental theme of the festival. Sunshine Day Dream was inevitable, but fun. The encore set of U.S. Blues and Not Fade Away was a good choice for the fireworks. As frequently was the case back in the day, Blues was a throw away musically, but Not Fade Away was kicked out strong. I, too, thought of We Bid You Good Night (which didn't seem appropriate since most of the crowd was heading out to hear Umphrey's, STS9 or just rave in the forest), I also thought Liberty might have been an appropriate way to send us old folks back to our beds in the campground.
Definitely one of my top 10 GD shows (out of some 2 dozen with Jerry between '71 and '89 and 10 TD/TOO shows since '02). A great weekend. I'd have to say my top 3 shows of the weekend were The Dead, Ani DiFranco, and Flogging Molly.

WOW! What a time at Rothbury. The Dead were on fire all night long with intense jamming throughout the show. 1st set left me wondering if there was going to be a DVD or some offical tape released of this baby- What do the dead have in store for us 2nd set?
2nd set-there's gonna be a party tonight! and what a party it was. We were grooving impossibly hard when they unleased 'Shakedown Street' on us. It was song after song of dead magic.
Man, do The Dead know how to headline a festival or what? Beautiful 4th of July day, wonderful scene, awsome setlist, AMAZING band. Thank you Dead for popping a big bag on us. You made this a special holiday for ALL of us!
These ARE the good ol' days.

the drummers were from the toubab krewe and possibly one from lotus to join mickey, billy, and jason.
this was straight up an all-star lineup. it was my first dead show ever, and i'm glad some of the veterans thought the show was a good one because that means i'm not crazy when i tell people it was one of the best shows ever!!!

The Dead made a statement that they are not going to Fade Away. Amazing night of music, amazing energy. The couple of tech f-ups early in the 2nd set only added to the fun. They were having fun on stage, the audience was ready for a party and fed off it, and around and around it went. Yeah, OMSN and US were predictable, but it was Sat the 4th, my oh my, whatcha gonna do...but dance and dance and dance, Great night of music. Thanks guys!

my second show with the core four (saw a show in foxboro in 2004 but didn't know what i was in for and consumed too much alcohol - spinny spinny)
the show was immense! they were teasing eyes from the beginning and then sugar mags was a great happy way to start. eyes was beautiful and had some melodic themes from bobby that i had never heard before! also was nice to watch bobby nod to phil to sing eyes! loved that!
loose lucy had everyone singing and grooving! friend of the devil almost brought me to tears and was well sung by all 30,000+ attendees and the band :)
into the mystic was perfect as everyone kept getting higher and higher on the music. and H>S>F was IMMENSE to end the first set. it felt like that suite just went on forever and ever. slipknot was my highlight in terms of musical intensity and that slight hesitation before franklin's and they just tore into it and the whole placed exploded into joyous celebration!
OMSN on a beautiful saturday night rocked our socks hard and then Shakedown had Warren completely in his element (i was very impressed with his playing and singing on this one). we had been dancing so hard and then they lock into the China Cat riff and off we go again. China Cat was very well played and I thought I heard a Foolish Heart coming instead of IKYR for a lil bit there but then they hit Rider and it's all good!
The deep space was wonderful and Viola Lee Blues was a complete surprise - hard rockin' and everyone was beltin' it out. Morning Dew pulled so hard at my heart strings and Bobby sang it really well. Throwing Stones resonated beautifully with the environmental-consciousness exhibited at the festival and was very well executed. The top layer of bread on the SSDD sandwich was a great "OH YEAH!" moment.
Never felt more like an American after 15 years in this country than singing US Blues at the top of my lungs while the fireworks were going off - and a wonderful Not Fade Away with everyone joining in on the unconditional love.
Best show I have ever seen in my life. Granted I didn't them with Jerry but heard that some old school heads were saying top 5 of all time. Check it out!

Yep, I would have to agree - easily the best post-Jerry Dead show I have ever seen and probably a top 5 overall, which is saying A LOT. They were on fire! The song selection was full of surprises and I love Warren more and more every time I hear him (Rothbury was my 5th Dead show of '09). My highlight (and this is difficult because the whole show was a highlight) was the viola lee blues out of space, and the shakedown st was so very good. Hell the whole concert was incredible.
I would also agree that I never felt more proud of our country than when all of Rothbury was singing US Blues during the fireworks! We also just had a blast in MI and met some grate folks in the campground. It was an unforgettable experience.
We can only hope they keep this magic alive with another tour!!

Wow, what a blast! It finally feels like the band is back. Jerry would be proud to see us carrying the torch that he dedicated his life to. End of an era? It sounds like the beginning of an era -- dizzy, the possibilities. I didn't jones for Jerry the whole night. That's the first time that happened since he died. A magician's paradice. You know our love will not fade away. P.S. BRING BACK THE DISCO BUS!!!!

awesome.....especially dosed in the front

Absolutely amazing. I guess I'm alone here in saying this was my first Dead show (I'm a lil baby...Jerry died when I was 5), but god damn it better not be my last.
When I went to the show I wasn't particularly familiar with the dead's work beyond the obvious (Friend of the Devil, Touch of Grey, Casey Jones, etc.). I watched the first set pretty passively, standing behind the biggest part of the crowd just admiring the musician's skill and whatnot. For me the second set was where it was at...it may have had something to do with my choice in midshow snack, but by time Shakedown Street came on I was dancin out of my mind. From that point until the fireworks at the end I had the absolute time of my life. I will be seeing TD again, there's no way a show that kicked that much ass will be their last.

OK,
Listened to Rothbury. Good show but not in the top 5 shows of the Tour. I guess you had to be there but I was not at Denver but clearly tell you that Denver takes the cake for me.
I heard that String cheese put on the Best show.

Toubab Krewe and Michael Travis from the String Cheese Incident were the drummers.
Incredible weekend. Happiest one ever. And after being at Rothbury last year, that's saying something. The Dead show was very special to me personally. Great stuff
