this has been a magical mystical tour
thanks to our good friends in tapeland have been able to listen to all but 3 shows
went to the forum show in LA which was absolutely great
as far as the show, the people and the lenient security (although the forum itself sucks for short staffed lines. lack of ventilation, slowass vendors and running out of bevs mid 2nd set)
this show we got to hear live last night and it sounded incredible with the highlight for me being the althea-eyes
a final thank you to my extended deadhead family such as
fellow concert goers, the tapers and of course bob. phil, bill
mickey and to jeff for his worthy rythem devil induction and
warren for being true to the music, not trying to be jerry nor
mule and being warren when music allowed
you guys didnt have to do this but we thank you
looking forward to 'dog at the greek, sf new years and any
other continuation of the magic!
GOD BLESS TO ALL

Listened to show last night on Sirius and was thoroughly impressed by all aspects of the musicianship. It seems to me like these guys have gotten their rocks off non-stop to playing music with one another on this tour. I was very hesistant before the tour began but after seeing 5 north east shows (including the MSG show, which was the most rockin' MSG show I've ever been privy to), I've come away from each one salivating for the next.
This is a new band, playing the Grateful Dead music catalogue, and then some. The energy levels may come and go from night-to-night, set-to-set, or song-to-song, but there is no doubt in my mind these guys love playing together and produce some of the best music on the planet.
A few quick closing remarks:
Thank you to the band and everyone involved for helping make this 2009 so special. To be able to go from the Allman Brothers in March, to the Dead in April/May/Rothbury, to Phish over the summer and then some more Ratdog, Allman, and Widespread is a welcome distraction to these shitty times in which we live.
I only hope the music never stops and we get a Philathon again at Nokia (maybe Warren can replace Jackie) and a Dead New Year's run.
Thanks again everyone, Rothbury in less than 7 weeks!
(especially, thank you to the band for last night's "Day's Between" - truly epic.)

Disappointing. They sounded good, but didn't play anything to get the crowd going early. The cover of Into the Mystic was the highlight of the first half of the show, unfortunately (Women Are Smarter was good too). Then they lost a good chunk of the audience at the HOUR LONG INTERMISSION. We had been partying in the sun since 3:30 PM with the Doobies and Allman Brothers and really needed a pick me up. Everyone was amped for the start of the show, but that slowly fizzled with their early song selections. The intermission pushed it over the edge. Many people, myself included, left after 30 or 45 minutes of waiting. It wasn't until I got all the way back to the campsite that they started playing again. I would've loved to hear Eyes of the World and Box of Rain and probably would've stayed throughout the show had they played them early on, but I guess it wasn't meant to be. Too bad, I was really excited for the show. I still had a great weekend, but I expected a lot more from The Dead.

First show for me since 93. Great cover of Into the Mystic, also Althea, Eyes and I loved Just Like Tom Thumb Blues.
I agree with Wil above-- it was a mellow show, they never really got us boogieing (we needed a Uncle-->Mexicalli, or something.)
*The setlist posted on this website is incorrect: Just Like Tom Thumb Blues was NOT a "first time played"-- it was played 7/12/89 at RFK.

it takes a day to get to the promised land...it takes two weeks to get home...just a sign of the times...went to denver...and 12th row for 3/4 set one and got so intertwined in the long intermission, missed first few songs and just hung back the rest of the show...reminded me of the last waltz....and glad they played the weight....just sort of fizzels out anymore....used to be the shrooms..and everyone dancing like fools...now everyone is on pharmies.......oh well...all good things in all good time... gotta admit...phil kicks it for his age and warren is a machine... down the road and see you around the bend...

Well, the show was good. i really enjoyed the crazy fingers, the dark star, into the mystic, but i also agree that the show was low-energy. the jams were pretty hot, and frequent, and warren was a force. the hour long intermission was a bit much. people were expected to stay the whole time for 3 concerts and breaks, so the extended intermission was a bit much. seemed like the boys were having a good time.
i would have liked to see derek trucks and or greg allman sit in - how many times do these bands get together? some crossover with warren and derek would have been sweet. the dead sound good, but it was obvious to me that warren is the energy that keeps it going. if not for him, it would have sounded tired and old. phil, bless him, sounds very tired when he sings, and in some cases, it changes the affect of the song. but warren was going back and forth doing the jerry thing - then his own thing - and it was his energy and his lead that kept everything together. he is the consummate lead. even his vocals were terrific. his into the mystic was spot on - way better than van snorison.

The Dead were really going for it musically--they were all in. The Hell in a Bucket was righteous. Into the Mystic...Warren really sung and played his way into my heart. Eyes of the World was a powerful, emotional performance, which led to a deep, dark space where they explored the inner reaches of the earth's mantle. Beautiful, expansive playing at a likewise beautiful and expansive earth site.

Disappointing is an understatement. Since it had been 20 years since my first show, and I had not seen any shows since Jerry died, I was excited to give the Dead another chance. The Gorge is amazing, the crowd was up for a good show, the weather perfect, the scene chill, so the stage was set. The Doobie brothers seemed like the only group that came to rock, while the Allman Bro's jammed a bit, they were medeocre. The first set was OK, Tom Thumb Blues was solid (perhaps the first time this tour, it has been previously played, I saw it in Landover myself on 3/15/2001), as was the Cover of Into The Mystic and a fun Woman are smarter. The second set never got much going. Poor song selection was rampant, especially Days Between which was terrible, what is Wier thinking? I have never seen so many people leave a show before it was over, in retrospect, I should have followed their lead, b/c I would have only missed an average Eyes and Box of Rain. I guess I should have just kept my memories of the late 80's and early 90's and saved the money and bought quality bootlegs instead of these tickets.
Rich, Seattele
Disappointed people....it's not just the band, the setlist, the crowd, or the venue, it's the combination of all these that bring a show to that space we all long for. That being said the second set was like the air being let out of a balloon(except for a stellar Eye's). The first set...a different story. Into The Mystic and the Women Smarter closer took me and my old tour gang back to that space. The Music Loose Lucy opener was pretty damn good too.
All in all there's no place I would of rather been last weekend. I think the boys left it all out there in Shoreline....in some ways nothings changed...if you want to reach Terrapin you need to see at least a leg of a tour.

Sleeping with The Dead
The First Set was Great - with Lucy, Wolf, Mystic and Women, but the 2nd set was a complete bust. Eyes was good as was Bucket, but to come out of Space into Days Between, come on. It was a complete let down. After the setlist at Shoreline I was hoping for an amazing show to finish the tour. Instead most of the people feft at the end were sleeping. The crowd was ready and wanting to get up and move but the band was stuck in the mud. Hope they tour again, but I pray to see a better set list the next time around

wasnt at the show... my GF was. Just heard the soundboards, and was thoroughly confused.
where was the show? it seems to have fallen between the cracks, as instantiated in the preeminence of Days Between in the second set. am unimpressed by the Eyes, and Althea esp (despite what others have said above)
there was a decided lack of coherence in the jams, and... where were the Warren solos again?
if he's gonna be turned up so loud that Bobby is reduced to background noise, he'd better damn well deliver on at least one of the songs. seriously.
this show was hardly representative of the tour. i find myself wondering who was in charge of sound... was it the same tech from the Allmans?
"it was obvious to me that warren is the energy that keeps it going," said PiedPeter (above)
--this seems like ridiculous bullshit to me. Warren seems... and i wasnt there, so i cant say for certain... to have twiddled the solo and jam on veritably every one of these songs. He seems to have been purposefully restraining himself. This is just what it sounded like to me.
i would like to see a lead guitar with no conflict of interest or more important things to do... I love Warren, but sometimes it seems as though his will isnt into making it happen as a group. i find myself wondering if it was purposeful, maybe to like set the Allmans set apart.
i understand that the setlist was for the most part somber, but i mean, Hell in a Bucket could have at least rocked out, Saturday night? the closest this got to RnR was like 30 seconds 3/4's of the way through Passenger.
i know i sound really negative here, but i think my main point is that this show was not representative of The Dead i saw elsewhere on tour, not by a long shot, and the failings seem to be mainly found in the eunuchism of the lead guitar which is evident throughout these sets.
two best songs of the show? Just Like Tom Thumbs Blues and Days Between.
people came for a party, and the main event seems to have been a snoozer. And i know You Cant Always Get What You Want... but this is the Dead goddammit.

I wasn't at Shoreline either, but went to Nassau, MSG, Hartford, and Los Angeles...
And I agree completely with Deadbeat Jeff… I’ve been to 24 “The Dead” shows from 2003, 2004, 2009 and must say I enjoyed much more the shows when they had Jimmy Herring playing a more distinctive, energetic, heartfelt, and climactically-inclined lead guitar (listen to Loser at Jones Beach in 2003). Warren’s guitar playing just sounds plain wimpy and hesitant on a majority of the songs they play (he does rock out from time to time and the songs he is probably more familiar with)… I mean at the Nassau show I went to he didn’t even attempt a guitar solo during Peggy-O which was extremely disappointing (Yes, I realize it was acoustic but Mark Karan in Ratdog rocks out when they play that song acoustic).
Don’t get me wrong, I think Warren is an amazing musician and I do think there is a place for him in the band because of his vocal abilities, but I just don’t think he has what it takes to be the lead guitar player, especially at the larger venues. I truly think you need to get MARK KARAN FROM RATDOG INVOLVED WITH THE BAND. He knows all of the material and he brings more punch to the lead guitar role. He is also more familiar with all of the lead melodies on all of the songs; this adds more texture and depth to the music. Mark is always going somewhere with his solos, he has that uncanny ability to bring a rockin’ guitar solo to a climax, much like Jerry used to do.
It’s sad to say but the parking lot party was often more interesting then some of the music they were playing. And you are welcome to criticize me for being critical, but I am just offering my opinion as a musician and loyal dead fan. Ratdog shows deliver far better music than I heard at these 2009 Dead shows…. I’ll keep going whenever they are touring though…would just be nice to get more out of the lead guitar.

I am glad others share my opinion of this show and it wasn't just me. The show was good but come on, it was low on erergy and it felt like the real tour closer was the May 14 Shoreline show. It was almost like they said to themselves "Oh crap we still need to play a show at the Gorge". I am happy I made it up to Washington to witness the beauty of the Gorge but Denver and the 2 Shoreline shows were much better.
However I have to disagree with Drew, hey man - Warren Haynes made this 2009 tour. Maybe you didn't experience it at the Gorge but trust me Haynes is the man both with his guitar AND his singing. Listen to Morning Dew from May 14 and tell me Mark Karan could sing that...

JackstrawfromColorado: agreed. i was at the Spec, and Morning Dew was... amazing and powerful.
Drew: Jones Beach '03! fuckin A man. compare that Shakedown-minglewood-Crazy Fingers-loser-playin... to the "jam" from this show. goodlord. yet i cant say that this whole tour was lackluster... that is absurd. it just seems that Warren has a different angle when HIS band is also at the event, or when he just doesnt feel like rocking. its really hard to say. but certainly that was the failing of this particular show.
its a shame. we dont get many shows out here in the NW. at all. (hint hint Bobby come soon :)
i feel shitty criticizing the boys at all, but thats really what it seemed like when i listened to the boards.

So with all the crap that is going on in the world, IE. Wars recession depression unemployment etc. We have one small bright spot we actually get ot hear the boys playing again and all you guys can do is bitch about it. How about not going and or not listening then you won't be so put out and we won't have to hear you cry and wimper.
pete, ballard
It was great getting together with friends and camping, but the show was the lowest octane show I've been to. Maybe it was the distance I was from the stage (on the lawn, about 100 feet down from the top, in the middle), but by the time they did "Space", then "Drums", then a very long "Days Between", I needed a strong finish oran Allman's/Dead/Dooby jam to get my blood circulating again, and it didn't happen. Three "One More Saturday Night" refrains seemed amateurish. My "Dead Show" days may be at an end. I did like the Van Morrison cover and Eyes of The World. When I heard them go back into Dark Star in the second set, I thought "here we go", but it just didn't happen for me.
I may sell my Phish tickets.

the sound at the gorge just wasn't on !!!
the gorge was on, shakedown st. was on, i was on,
but when the show started you could barely hear the music.
come on, r n r is about being loud and clear, neither came
through. great vibe, crappy sound. the break was way too long!! i want to say the music was great but i just couldn't hear it well enough. will i travel again to see them, yes.

pete... i'm not sure what your getting at.
cry and whimper? just being honest: its just lame. you said it yourself-- everyone in WA state as one:"We get to here the Boys!" but no... instead they heard basic and lurchy guitar which grogged through the jam destroying any and all harmony in its path.
The shows i saw were for the most part AWESOME. this show, from what i've heard tell of, and what i've gathered from the boards, was just nonexistent.
these guys up here dont get that many shows, and to wait months, take off work, put out near a weeks pay to get it done and have decent seats, just to hear Warren shove his guitar up his ass every time the jam arrives, is beyond disillusioning, and is painfully obvious as being the case... and doesnt seem to have been an entirely isolated incident.
i dont like Negative Nancys either... i'm just legitimately confused as to what happened here. i mean, the setlist looks SICK on paper, but you have everyone being like "the setlist was terrible," why is that?
what was different? Warren rocking his ass off with the Allmans, and then sulking in the corner with the Dead 'cause hes not the only one on the jumbo tron anymore. We all know that Warren has the ability to rock-out, what he is capable of, so i let the facts speak for themselves: listen to the boards and tell me i'm wrong.
dont get us (me) wrong. we all love the boys and will certainly go see them again, anytime anywhere.

but really i think its time to examine the field.
who are the worthy contenders?
Mark, Steve, Jimmy, and Warren.

Although to be fair, after listening a few more times, my review applies primarilly to the 2nd set... i guess thats how dragging it really was: made me forget the good time had earlier.
the first set sounded quite fun.

Pete - I think you took it the wrong way buddy. I saw 4 shows, 3 of them were amazing, out of this world, undescribable, you name the adjective. The Gorge was just kind of blahh if you compared it to the other 3 shows I saw (Denver and both Shorelines). I think my expectations for the Gorge were very high after what I had seen before and knowing it was the last show of the tour I thought it may be totally rocking. Trust me man I am beyond grateful for this tour and the shows I got to attend but this is a review site and I was being honest.
JackstrawfromColorado, Denver
I thought the show was killer! Great musicianship from all. Warren's harmonies very Brent-like, and his playing was great.
Space never took off, and yes i would of prefered a shaker over Days Between any day of the week, but it sounded better than the ones i remember from back in the day.
Im just listening now to Archive and still say it was a great show. I think they ran out of time or we would of had a bigger encore! There's over 3 hours here!
Boys, please say Fall Tour! or at least one in 2010!

Another tour wrapped up!! The Gorge wasn't as good as some of the others. I saw NC, DC, & VA and was happy, happy 'cause my expectations were not too high. Still the shows were fuckin' great! Hell just to see the boys in 2009 after all these years is cool.
However, this tour and all the other "The Dead" tours ('03,'04)
just don't compare to the music from 2002.
The family reunion and fall tour '02 was the best post-Jerry Grateful Dead music for my money. Jimmy Herring was a much more appropriate guitar player for their music. He was able to play the quick notes, you know those 16th and 32nd notes that Jerry would tear up. Also, Rob Barraco sang the Jerry songs better than anyone. If you haven't heard this tour, check it out.
Not to mention that Robert Hunter played during the set breaks,
Boys in the Barroom anyone?
I like Warren, hell, I go to the Christmas Jam and rock out with him every year here in Asheville. He's a great player and singer, but I think the boys need something different. The need people in the band that really know the material. I could always tell when Warren was reading the lyrics as he was singing.
(Bobby will do this also once in a while)
My dream line up for post-Jerry GD music:
The core four, plus Rob Baracco and John Kadlecik from DSO.
Those two are like Grateful Dead scholars, they know all the little
GD details that Warren doesn't. I know it'll never happen, but if it did we would finally get closer to that true GD sound.
Just my two cents, what do you think?
See you on tour!

I agree that the Gorge was not the best. We all had alot of travel and a long day prior to The Dead coming on stage. So did the band. Its not just how the band plays, its how we feel as well. I think the same is true every night, hence the varied reviews.
Forget about the CD's as a means of judging a show. They are fun to listen to but we all know the live experience, even with today's audio quality, never translates well.
We should also remember that its not the same band that we saw when Jerry was alive 15 plus years ago. So, we need to have an open mind to what we hear and experience.
I was lucky enough to see 17 of the 22 shows. I did Albany through Philadelphia and Denver through the Gorge. I would say as a general rule, each show was a bit better than the last with the exception of the Gorge and Denver for me. In New Jersey, Branford really made the band step it up a notch to make those shows special.
Every show I saw had its high points. Most shows had some very low points too. In all I would say the band was 10 times better than '04. My Favorites of the tour were Sunday in Worchestor, Madison Square Garden and The Forum.
I was not a big Warren fan prior to this tour and still am not, but I enjoyed him alot more than I thought I would. I wish his vocal harmonies and guitar playing were sometimes not so prominent and why Into the Mystic and Glory Road? If Warren sings, he has a great voice for Brent tunes. Lets here Blow Away and Easy to Love You on the next tour.
Jeff was great and i loved his addition to drums most nights. I love Bobby and Ratdog is my passion, but he even goofed the Buffalo Lyric in Truckin' in Buffalo, with the teleprompter. I find that funny, sort of...It was cool to see the pink guitar come out.
Setlists were varied and I liked that. I think almost every night the first set was better and played stronger than the second set. Some of the Jams were way too long and flopped, but once in awhile it all clicked.
Despite my Warren comments above, I thought it was sometimes cool how one night Bob would sing a song and the next time it came around in rotation, Warren would sing or they would swap different verses each time. Schoolgirl was played in the old Grateful Dead style one night and thhen next time in the Ratdog style. Way to go for changing things up and keeping it interesting.
On a final note about the scene. I was surprised by the amount of Nitrous in the Northeast and lack of vending out west. Way more dirty street kids on the east coast too. I loved the venue selection for the most part. Famous venues from our past. Never did I think I would be back at the forum 20 years later or return to Shoreline where I saw my first California shows in '87.
So, hopefully we can see them again in the late fall or at New Years. If not, it was a good ride and generally exceeded my expectations.

i just want to say THANKS ALOT!!!!!!!! I saw around 80 GD shows from 88-95, and thought i would never go again. I saw the first show at shoreline, and the gorge show and i kind of agree that the second set of the gorge was a little lackluster, but it was still the DEAD!!!! Nothing compares for me, and it never will!!!! I hooked my wife and a good buddy also. They are praying for a fall tour or 2010!! There is nothing on this planet like a dead show, and that is what makes it a very cool planet!!!! Thanks again!!!!
