Reviews
Good sound - level and mix. I was in 200s.
The band was tight, well rehearsed and had relearned all the material - which gave an opportunity to rearrange many of the songs, sometimes for the better, sometimes not.
This is definitely (IMHO) the best line-up of the Dead in the post-Jerry era. Having a single lead guitarist (plus Warren's vocal chops) adds focus that had been lacking in other versions. Chimenti's keys were excellent. So the 6 man band format is really good.
Overall I give the show a "B" grade, meaning it stood up favorably to 80s and 90s Dead shows. That's high praise (well the 80s part anyway).
Lowlights:
Birdsong (a friend renamed it "whale song" as it wallowed along)
Phil singing "lady finger" part on St Stephen
Phil stretching out Unbroken Chain final verses just a little too long
Highlights:
Uncle John's band (excellent vocals)
Help/Slip/Frankins (Phil did well singing Franklins)
Most of 2nd set - Unbroken, Jam, Other, Jam, Drums with Fire Dancers was the best - unbelievable dancing, Sugaree was hot, Gimmee Shelter rocked
encore of St Stephen/Eleven and Touch was a big bonus
Other:
Cassidy was solid
Sugar mags, although a great choice for closer, didn't do it for me due to the rearrangement of SSDD to have more of a "greatest story" rhythmic feel to it. Credit to the band for reworking it, but shoulda left it alone.
Same with Good Lovin' - credit for effort of the rearrangement, but it didn't quite work.
Summary:
Tight band, great vocals, let Warren sing more parts (Phil, give it up!), fantasy setlist, intense 2nd set jamming, lose Birdsong.

Didn't know what to expect and was very impressed. Had a mind block---Does anyone know the name of the Allman Brothers tune that they started jaming out during St. Stephen/The Eleven? And was that Foxy Lady as well?

The first reviewer does a good job with this show.
Very fair review wi/o going off the deep end either way.
A set list does not always tell the whole story.
My guess is there will be some free shows in the next couple of days? before Thursday night.

First off, I had to laugh at the "weir coming on " tease , there were an awful lot of people lingering getting inside this show. I walked into the 200 section and like some kind of flashback I was having , the band promptly kicked down a grate opener ! The Help>Slip>Franklins was as good as it gets ! Warren lays back a little, but can be heard adding those little twangy Allman sounds which fits perfectly in this lineup. Good Lovin had a good feeling to it and the lights were fantastic. It sounded as close to the REAL BAND as possible, maybe better in some ways. Good stuff......Cassidy was another song kept close to the vest, and the BIRD SONG was very much like Dark Star during the jams. The end of the 1st set came as a suprise I haven't seen in many years...Uncle Johns, it was a sweet question to the age old adage..."How does this song go.."
Opening the second set was the PHIL show highlight.
Unbroken seemed most appropriate for the slot, maybe we were singing to the dogmatic Christian Guy out in front of the venue, calling us devil worshippers and preaching from experience of his so-called troubled past being part of Jerrys Kids...... If Jesus were alive today, he would surely be found around this crowd. And even in a song.....
Why in the world did Billy and Mickey wait so long to bring that circus act on stage during drums. I mean half naked women with Fire dancing in a rythmic mandala ? That was entertainment in a whole new perspective ! The best drum "presentation" ever . From there my vision blurred a little by Sugaree, this song of all the songs, makes me miss Jerry, but Warren added a nice new feel to this.
The energy didn't let up after Sugar Mag>Sunshine. Heck ,they musta been pounding "Rockstars" backstage, because they came out smokin with St.STEPHEN and there were Mini segments of different tunes being thrown in the mix into the 11. This is the Season of "What Now ? "
What can I say,,,,Touch of Grey was like the DEAD National Anthem, with everyone singing and dancing and reminiscing on good old times at "DeadsneyLand. Thank you Frankie and Calico for making sure all those cool people still congregate together ! Plus, for once, we didn't have to pay to park.
Some gaps in the music as far as guitar, but more than filled by PHIL and the wingman Jeff on Keys. In ways this to me was a great show, in other ways, it was lacking.........Well..........Guitarcia. Get over it, this is as close to the Good Ole Grateful Dead Show as we will ever see again in this Universe. That is until.....
Thursday night should be special.....
Good to see you P.V.Head !

This show was a very solid performance. The Allmans tune they jammed during St Stephen was Blue Sky, and they did a Foxy lady Jam at the end of the Eleven.
The first set was well played, a little slow, but very solid. The second set was smoking. The Unbroken was excellent, and I agree with weird arrangemnet with the last verses of the Chain. Otherwise, the jam on the end of the Chain was down and dirty. Which lead perfectly into Other One. At one point it seemed like they might leave the other one for truckin, but thank GOD they stayed on task. The drums was the highlight of the show (last time I said that was Gyuto Monk show Shoreline 95), with Mickey rapping about racism, and other planetary issues. All this with an incredible groove flowing. Even though it was only 2 songs pre drums, it was stellar. Sugaree was triumphant. Sugar Mag was slow, with SSDD taking us home nicely. Encore was amazing....All in All, having both drummers and Phil laying that old familar groove, it was like old times. I mean it.

There Allman shows with Warren in Oakland Tues, and Weds. Maybe someone will sit in with them?

The above review about Phil suprises me and is hard to believe. I will listen for myself soon but the thought of Phil singing St Stephen is mouth watering to me. Maybe it's just different taste but i personally would want WAY more Phil and much less Warren. But it's all good.

Phil singing the lady finger line of Stephen was a highlight of the show. It was great. Very nostalgic, and brought many tears to many faces in attendance.

Crhis- great reviews. You are spot on with the Phil/Stephen comment. Peace out all you heads!

1st let me say it was sooo good to back at Shoreline with The Dead, and I agree this is the best version of the Band since Jerry left us. My 4th show on the Tour and my buddy and me are expecting a really good show from past performances, I see some people picked up on the Allman jam,I thought that was part of the MTN Jam myself and the Foxy lady jam, but I thought we also got a Southern Man jam and nobody has mentioned that??
Anyhow here is my take for what it is worth, this show was on par with last saturday in Philly, probably cause alot of the same songs were played and that was OK!!!Help/Slipknot/Franklins was a wonderful start to the evening, Good Lovin and thats exactly what we all felt at Shoreline,Cassidy was done well, then they killed it on Bird Song, Warren has really brought some heartfelt guitar work to this tour and you can really see that this band clicks!!!Uncle John to close the 1st set is a perfect choice as the 22 thousand in attendence know every word and its just another sing along, I thought this is where I heard Warren put a 3 minute Southern Man jam in this song??I could be wrong cause I had a Really Good time!!! 2nd set opener Unbroken Chain just blew me away and the Other One/Drums-Fantastic show was done on Drums with the Fire Dancers and Twirlers, this was way COOL and out of Space into Sugaree and when I say Warren did right by Jerry on this song, even Garcia would have watched him play this one, well done Warren, you brought a tear to many an eye on this song, I just think we all witnessed a little majic and low and behold there was a hell of alot more Majic to come this night. Bam Gimme Shelter and the house was Rockin and they played there asses off on this song as well-OMG-Sugar Mag and they were so good you did not know if they would play an encore, but Micky did mention that the curfew was off, then it happened a St Stephen Encore, get the F*** out of here and they just Killed it, into an Eleven and at this point I could have died and gone to heaven-OMG again, then what a perfect end to a fantastic show, Touch of Grey, and there was alot of Grey that enjoyed this show!!! God Bless the Grateful Dead and can you guys sneak into Humphreys as the Warlocks and play??? Just Dreamin a little, Bobby we will see you and the Dog 9/4/09 and have a Great Summer and THANK YOU FOR A REAL GOOD TIME, Smile,Smile,Smile. Peace!!

nice setlist, but warren is boggin things down with his wa wa on every song, his lack of feel for this music is evident, and the jams suffer mightily. Jerry obviously hasn't been out very much, sits home listening to old versions of lost sailor on his casettes, not realizing the incredible amount fo fresh great music out there, goes off to see one show, goes all ga ga thinkin that this is the real deal bc he has been under his rock for so long, yer the fool jerry, get a grip

oh rohan, god forbid a man have a fun time at a show with dead music. you obviously don't really know what this is all about and its obviously you learned nothing about the welcoming, supportive environment that Jerry and the guys built. im sure you can nail those Jerry-like chromatic patterns on your ax just like like warren, right?
i was at the show, never saw jerry (died when i was 12), but i've seen phil a few times and was at new years, this was a fun lively show, everyone had a good time and it was great to spend a night under the stars by the bay with The Dead!

Oh-oh, what a I want to know is, are you kind? (Rohan)
I still miss Jerry too, but I loved the show, loved being with everyone and loved the music. Seems like it's always subjective and you take a way what you bring. I think Warren honors Jerry's spirit and he shreds. I'm a Mule fan though so I bring some bias to that observation.
Truly, this is a great incarnation and what was is over, but what is made me very happy at Shoreline and I hope we all get to it again sooner than later.

Drove up from LA to see second show of my Cali Trip. A fun time had on the lawn. Wished it was a little louder, but will sit in reserve on Thursday to get a better view and sound. Setlists have been excellent. Everything about Shoreline that I was told was true...awesome venue. On to third and final show...

Just got my Cds of this show that I gave a TEN review after the show.Listening to this show again gave me goose bumps, I actually heard the Southern Man jam during Unbroken Chain, OK I was feelin pretty darn good at the show, I think during St Stephen we got both a mixture of MTN/BLUE sky jam, but other then that I saw 4 shows and my buddy sent me the whole tour and 5/2/09 and 5/10/09 were the best!!! MSG,East Rutherford and Forum and 5/1/09 Philly were right behind, Whooly S*** I was at 4 of those six, Toasty Roasty and family going to 4th of july festival, he out does me again Have fun at that one and the St Stephen/Eleven/Touch of Grey has to be the best Encore in 150 shows I have seen, although Electric Ripple at Cap center in the late 80s was pretty darn cool, but hell this encore was another set, only the Grateful Freakin Dead aka The DEAD do stuff like that!!!
Blanch, San Diego
Wonder-full show! Thank you! What a treat to see "the boys" all playin' together again! I loved everything about the show. The music, the stars, the people... Couldn't stop dancing. So much fun! All I could say was,"Wow!".
What stood out for me even more, I am surprised no one really commented on it much, was all of us singing along to so many tunes! We used to sing along only on certain songs, i.e. Not Fade Away, but this night, we were all singing together a lot. I really loved that part; I love it when we are all together. There's nothing like it, ever, anywhere.
And did anyone mention the magic? The orange cones that appeared so our friends could save us a parking space, the all-night market that appeared, (that wasn't there before), just as we were commenting on wanting an ice cream after the show, the wonder of the fire dancers just when we thought the show was winding down, the way were all got in there sweet and peaceful-like, the way we were blessed with a third set...
In all my years, there's 2 decisions I am so happy I made; 1.) becoming a gardener, and, 2.) loving the Grateful Dead.
Thank you for the pre-B-Day Special, and keeping my heart young and full of fun!
Let's keep on singing, always!
