It was by far the sickest show at the forum ever!!!They have risen and sooooo have i .Sorry east coast they are home.

What a delightfully sick show. The Boyz jumped right in feet first...the setlist speaks for itself. Such crazy 1st set jamming right out of the gate. The most Grateful Petter I have heard in my life. 1st half of the second set...totally in your face full tilt boggie rock...only to drop down into a wonderful drumz> space> DS> Wharf> DS..this was worth the price of admission!!! Finished Satisfyingly...

Great, great show. The Warf Rat was crazy. The vocals at the show were very good. Warren killed it tonight. The Scarlet/Fire jam was incredible. The crowd was a blast
Glynne, San Diego
What a setlist! Thats why the chicago run was just plain average...pretty much what happened every year in the 90's. God, I hate Chicago shows...congrats, West Coast.

ROCK ROCK ROCK!
Stretching boundaries on powerful instrumental riffs in Viola Lee Blues trumped anything I could have ever expected in an open that wouldn't quit. So full of energy, so many notes. Bertha became more like a break between jam sessions. Heard some heads saying they just didn't know what to think of the first set yet... how about INSANE! Especially with the Black Peter/Cosmic Charlie duo to wrap up a first set of some real vault gems.
Wharf Rat teaser was my favorite... listen to the Dark Star out of Space and you'll hear it. I used to love the tip-offs to start a tune but these guys are taking it to a whole new level. Excellent musicianship!
"Wandered downtown, nowhere to go but just hang around."

That was pure bliss, must be something in the air in Cali

Agree that the first set started very strong but that was it.
You guys were high and your perspective is warped.
Bobby held Shakedown back, Scarlet Begonias lackluster, Fire to fast and Dark Star utterley boring.
Technically the sound was muddled without the seperation, clarity and force that has always been there. A monkey could have run the lights-non entity. Lights have allways been crucial to pushing and pulling wandering jams. Reminds me of someone pulling up a photoshop template and saying look how cool it looks but not actcually creating anything.
I have to admit that they deserve an A for effort.

GREEEEEEEEEEEEEAT SHOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The first set was a very pleasant suprise of the boys jammin and playin , the viola-bertha-viola-caution-viola jam was a musical clinic, the boys were tight.
great peter and hot cosmic to close first set
the second set pick up where the first left off and the scarlet/fire was the highest lite in a night of highlites.
The energy was high and the musicans and audinece just keep feeding off each other all night
All in all got what i always get from all carnations of the dead and thats taken on a magical mystical journey where
the music takes you and to the SIX musicians that entertained us last night- BLESS YOU for sharing your music with us

No Jerry. Yes he was missed and its not the "same:"
It was amazing and blissful and crisp. Not for old time sake .. but for in your face SICK great music. New Speedway was great great.. loved it.The show open 1st set was a classic for any era.. really amazing. The LA crowd was alive and happy as could be.
Just can say enough.. the Satisfaction was rocking..... go go go.
Best Part.. Mickey Hart saying " Feels good doensnt it?"! at end of show.. crowd goes crzy...

Right away in the first set you could hear a Dark Star tease. Didn't think it was coming after awhile. Thought they might save that for home - Shoreline.
More importantly, the Fire was expected and a good call. Very nice tease before Scarlet to emphasize it, and nice indecision on the segway into Fire - after all that Southern California has been through in terms of fire on the mountain (San Diego, Malibu, etc.) since their last tour.
Great show.

the first set was ridiculous. for any casual deadheads (if you are, you dont get it) you need to realize how epic a song Viola Lee Blues is.
Caution was easily the highlight of the show. I felt pigpen right there with me. Warren really did a good job.
I have only seen one of these things (before this) after Jerry died, and after last night, I realized it is still going on.
black peter>cosmic charlie
The fucking show was Shakespearian!

A creative and bold show. The band left it all on the stage as usual. Brilliant light and sound. The crowd was the highest energy and the security was patient and lenient. Warren is the perfect addition, not trying to be anything but his bad self. The camaraderie among the boys is undeniable. Its all about great friends and love for the music. Like Mickey said, 'Take this positive energy home with you and do something with it.' Thank you Dead...I miss you already.
Love the 'Viola-Bertha-Viola-Caution-Viola' Club sandwich.

I could default and say the setlist says it all. However, some color helps to tell the tale.
I was in a group of five, with 18th row tickets on the floor, center stage.
Mitch called the opener. Viola Lee blazed, honestly reminiscient of Harpur College (probably my favorite Dicks Picks). Bertha, although great, was a jamming break. Back into Viola..drifiting into Caution Jam…nope, correction…Full Caution with Warren screaming out
I went down to see a gypsy woman
Wanna find out, oh, what's wrong with me…
The jamming was so tight, hard to describe. Late 68-early 69 intensity.
Almost too intense for a place the size of the Forum, but ultimately right on..
Wow, back into Viola…

I wrote a letter, mailed it in the air
You may know my brother, I've got a friend somewhere…
Noah Lewis would be proud…
Aside from a nice transistion, Black Peter was a strange call..
Way too mellow to follow the most amazing jam. I was thinking it would head toward
The Eleven.
When Bob spit up the line Annie Beauneu…nice mix of nostalgia..
And then….Cosmic Charlie….incredible.
Sure, it sounds like a prequel to Truckin (along with the line Truckin in style along the avenue…) followed by horrible rhymes..This is one tune that lyrically made no sense to me, and it didn’t matter
I just wonder if you shouldn't feel
less concern about the deep unreal
The very first word is : How do you do?
The last: go home, your mama's callin you
This could have been an incredible second set song for Jerry…I am sure he would have broken this out at some point, probably post drums in place of The Last Time.
We’ll be back in just a little bit…
3 Minute jam into Shakedown..
Many thanks to Warren on this one. He owned this version from start to finish. The speed, the vocals, the jam, the pace…the jam between begins….sounding like Wang Dang…then Spoonful….then
Please don’t dominate the rap Jack…
Wow, no Bob songs so far.
Bob sang New Speedway like it was his own. Now its called Altamont Raceway.
Warren ripped this one up as well.
No way, Shakedown and Scarlet pre-drums…Fire ended on the word FIRE!
It actually went Space – Drums
Yep…Dark Star
Stay in the A… Wharf Rat.
Warren is August West
Back to duh….but harmony second verse..
And then…oh yeah, I live in LA
Satisfaction…
Try Try Try I can’t I cant I cant
Pondering the encore for 10 minutes, then feeling like a fool….
Uhey Saturday Night….
Wow, only one Bob song the whole night.
2 Covers
Noah Lewis would be proud…
Mick Jagger would be jealous…

it's funny that most people who have posted on this board are from the area. i guess many gypsies don't have access to such technology yet. Quality was far enough above average to pay for the lack of quantity in the area.
it all flowed well, with disctinct eras represented thoughout. in time and energy, the first set was mostly 60's. i'm happy with any pick out of about 30 (Alligator, Clementine, Moutains, old-school Spanish Jam, New Potato, Cryptical, The Main Ten, Caution, etc.) Viola Lee and Caution were certainly nothing to complain about.
Opening of the second harked back to shows played 32 years ago (to the day, one day off from the most popular/overrated show in history Cornell, 5-8-77). Shakedown, Scarlet>Fire dominated the pre-Space. The Dark Star, Wharf Rat juxtoposition was reminiscent of 1971.
This year is the best since they've been together post-Jerry. Since '98, they've made strides. They're at their optimal size for the first time, and Jeff is playing really well (featured more in previous shows with 1974 tones). Warren is less overwhelming than in some years too.

To me this was a 50/50 show.
First let me say that seeing (and hearing) the boys together again was totally worth the trip.
It made me realize how much I miss Billy and Mickey. Their playing, especially during Drums, was outstanding.
But this was not a show for people who like the songs more than the jams - especially as long as these jams were.
I dig both, but to my ear a lot of these jams were carried by repetition and ended in dissonance.
While I have a lot of respect for Warren, Dark Star will always be Jerry's song. No one plays it like he did and in my opinion, this band, while trying hard, did not take it where it could be taken.
Bobby has been criticized in Ratdog for slowing down songs and this night's Wharf Rat was a perfect example.
God! Was it slow and it really brought down the energy level. I think I dozed off for a second.
The fun Satifaction cover woke me back up though!
Finally, I have to say that the old joke does have some truth to it: When my buzz wore off the band just didn't sound as good.
And do I really want to have to get high to enjoy a show?
Not really my thing anymore.
Of course I am in the minority here as I ran into so many completely wasted (mostly drunk) people at this show.
To the 3 tripping young ladies who decided to lay in the middle of the dark parking lot as cars were leaving the show: I hope you heeded my advice and are alive and well.
That said, if they tour again, I'll go if I can.
Overall it was fun, and how often do you get together with so many fun and crazy people? Except for a couple of exceptions, everyone we met at this show was very kind.
But man! I sure wish I'd hit the first Shoreline show. What a set list!!!

Was blown away from the first note to the very last note.
Terrific journey of music that showcased different era's as well as playing styles.
Loved every minute.

Thanks so much to the guys in the collonnade smokers pit who hooked me up with a copy of their ticket, you guys are cool. After taking matters into my own hands (there were no spare tickets in the lot whatsoever) I managed to catch the second half of the show, bummed i missed viola lee though. So cool to hear warren's guitar tones blending with bobby's thick chunk chachunks. See ya'll on thursday!

So much has been said already. I'd give the show 9 out of 10 easy. On the plus side, the first set was not any old second set inversion, it was a new take pure and simple. The set really played into Warren's blues-inflected guitar stylings. I reallyenjoyed the each of the guys taking a whack at a verse in a song, the "vocal rounding" kept it interesting. Thank god, they didn't let Mickey "rap" Fire on the Mountain. The second set hummed along quite nicely, I agree that the sound seemed "muddy' at some points. I found the space (of drums -> space) really tedious, probably because drums was the best ever for me. Final points: I don't like Weir's speaking the lyrics, but they tell me even Robert Goulet in his twilight has gone this root. Also, i was surprised at how front and center Warren was, despite stage left positioning he's a lot of the reason this concotion is working. Almost too much so in a weird way.

Last time at the Forum was 1989, and not much has changed in the area,Parking lot vibe very good!! Interesting 1st set to say the least, Viola/Bertha/Viola/Caution/Viola-how freakin cool is that!! A wonderful Black Peter into Cosmic and thats exactly the word for this 1st set COSMIC. 2nd set gets down to the Basics, Shakedown and everyone is Dancin,a nice Boogie and then it happens, Scarlet/Fire and the joint is swaying with the music, Drums/Space and then it happens again,Dark freakin Star into a very sweet Wharf Rat and back into Dark Star, now hold on they did not play this next song, yes they most certainly did-SATISFACTION. I can`t remember the Forum jumping like this song and a very nice Saturday night to send us home, WOW and OMG these boys can play and I guess Toasty Roasty and I have to go to Shoreline tomorrow, if we must. I can`t get no ????????? OUCH that was a hot song!!!

M-Kleiser - I understand your exitement, but please, no comparisons with the Viola at Harpur College (5-2-70).

I used to see 3 shows a year in the 80s. I had not seen them since 1994 or Lesh in 99 or so and was really happy to be there. It felt so good to be in the same room with the band!
The show overall was a bit on the mellow side for me - not bad just real mellow. I dug the quicker numbers the best that night.
The crowd was great. Good time people all around.
One thing cuaght my attention though. When Phil came out and addressed the crowd, I immediatley thought, wow I have never heard more than Bobby sayin "We're goin to take a break, you can too"
But when Phil went into his organ donor speech, there was no denying that the times have changed indeed. :)
Glad you''re still around boys.
