The set list you have for May 5th show is missing a song. After "They love each other" they played "Touch of Grey"

Ian Sturt, Chicago
Personally I was hoping for a more energetic set list, but I'm not complaining. This was the first concert I've seen at Allstate Arena, and I mentioned to my friend that the sound quality wasn’t that good. (sec 216) He told me that the acoustics at Allstate are really poor, due to the sound dampening applied to the ceiling to keep out the jet noise. It also really affects the sound inside too. Anybody on the lower level have a sound opinion? Great crowd, good time. Next show I attend will hopefully be outside.

Amazing show from start to finish...great energy and flow, superb song placement and segues from song to song...nothing felt forced, well played and dynamic throughout.

Set I began with a really funky Dancin' with fantastic guitar interplay and amazing riffs from Warren, the song just grooved and led naturally into a well played Jed. Charlie had nice grooves to boot, Warren just played and sang well all night, he has a beautiful gritty tone with real depth and emotion. Weather Report>Let is Grow: the band played the composed pieces with grace and professionalism, a cathartic and inspiring end to a monster first set.

Set II started off where set 1 finished...Truckin' was energetic with high quality jamming but the Throwing Stones was a major and unexpected highlight of set II. the boys just twisted and turned...the band were locked-in exploring new territory between verses. Unbroken chain was well played and a delight to hear...Like Dancin' Drums>Space was short and sweet very funky, fun...Come Together was extremely well played with great jamming. Bobby was locked-in on Bucket, I was so honored to hear him belt out those falsetto "ride!, ride! ride!" verses during the end refrain. About 5 minutes before the opening chords to Rider I heard bits and pieces of Rider but no one at this point was sure what they were playing...I heard one guy yell for what was one of the funniest comments of the evening, "I think it's gonna be a Cream Puff War." then Rider just blossomed after some mellow and well played improv out of Bucket...well placed and a great bookend to the 2 day run in Chi-town...

Brokedown Palace encore couldn't have said it better, our souls were rocked last night and the crowds' energy displayed they love this band more than words can tell.

Pre-show Scene = Awesome, Shakedown Street was hummin!! Security was nice and lax. A fun lil' bus band was getting us into the groove.

Seats = Behind the stage, sound and visuals were not there but just to be there again and hearing some of the best tunes ever was nice.

Setlist = Highlights = All he Chicago based tunes were cool, no mention or ref. to Cinco of May, Oh well. Jed & Golden Rd. were great "Hey, Heeey" TLEO & Weather Report made me wish I brought me my wife. Truckin & Come Togther got me excited.

Lowlights - I had to be at work at 6am today (Wed.)

That me first say I love The Dead and its a treat just to be in there presence. Now let me say that the best part of the night was prbably the funin the lot. The Allstate Arena is one of the worst venues on earth. I was sitting next to a master sound mixer from Chicago and he said there is a dead zone in the arena that makes the acoustics terrible.

Next again its an honor to see the dead and I have seen them a huge amount of times. But Bobby is not a "ring" leader and never will be one. He tries way to hard to pull everything together that once came naturally for the band. I hate to bring up Jerry, but when he was around everybody in the band could just look at him or hear where he was going with the songs and jams. Its like what it would be if Scottie Pippin was playing without Michael Jordan in the 90's. The Touch of Grey last night is my exact point of how rough the transitions are nowadays! Am I going to see them again, Hell Yes, they are what I grew up on. I just question the $100 for the product they are putting out.

we were in section 115, pretty much dead center, about 10 rows up, and the sound was fine, but I know that was not the case in all sections.
anyway, some rough spots in the show, but great song selection, some old gems we've not heard in quite a while.
warren is a fine addition
i saw them 2 weeks ago on long island, and this was a much smoother and better played show by a wide margin.

i enjoyed may 4th more, but still, the guys pulled out a great show on the 5th as well. looking forward to rothbury and who knows what after that. Im hoping for a late fall tour after warren is done touring with the brothers.

Let me start out by saying im only a 21 year old kid you last saw the dead in 2004. So never seeing Jerry my opnion may be a little off, but..... O my God!!! I went in with the optimism of how good can this show really be? And they BLEW me AWAY!!! First set was pure fire!!!! Dancin opener was the heat!!! (all we need is music, sweat music, theres music everywhere!!!) Tenessee was nothing special but very nice sing along. Then Came GOLDEN FREAKIN ROAD! Rocked the House!!! (Come join the party everyday!) Into Mr. Charlie!!! Are you kidding me!!! Just unload my shotgun take a little skin!!!! They love Each Other was a beautiful way to calm things down a little. They nailed the vocals perfectly, sounded so crisp and sweet. Into TOUCH OF GREY!!! Another great sing along had the whole place rocking….and then they segued into WEATHER REPORT!!!!!>LET IT GROW!!!!!!! Our whole crew was in tears! What a beautiful first set. We couldn’t even begin to guess what the second set had in store. Pshhh so what do they do? Open with F-in TRUCKIN!!! Pure fire just rocked it! Bobby didn’t forget any of the words and the band completely nailed all the build up and explosions. Throwing stones was sooooo funky!!! Couldn’t believe what they were doing with it. Totally not a basic rocking throwing stones they had this crazy funk waa going on made it sooooo crazy!!! And then came the highlight of the night! I had been telling everyone before the show that I had a dream and asked phill to play unbroken chain and sure enough!!!! ALL MY DREAMS COME TRUE!!! WE all just went insane!!!!!!!!!!! Could not believe that they were playing it!!!! Drumz and space was a brand new animal. Turned into a huge electronic dance party. Ive never heard a space with sooooo much FUNK!!!! And then to come out of space into COME TOGETHER!!!! Love how they do this!!! Bobby can really nail the vocals had the whole place singing!!! I rather see them do this than butcher a jerry ballad. Hell in a bucket was amazing!!!! So Glad I got hear Bobby give us a “ride, ride, ride” and then end it all with one of the most beautiful GD songs ever!!! I KNOW YOU RIDER!!!! We were all jaw dropped speechless!!!! Encore Brokedown palace!!!!!! PSHHH words cant explain the energy that was in the arena!!

SupaTripa, Space
I have been seeing Grateful Dead shows at this crappy venue for decades. I only will see shows there if I am in the front 10 rows on the floor. The acoustics are the worst when I compare every venue that I have been seeing the GD/Dead. This includes stadiums, which are usually terrible. I force myself to see them here only because it is so close to where I live.

Hey Air Jordan...I couldn't agree with you more, Bobby really annoyed the crap out of me at the Penn State show in Oct., constantly turning around and trying to "lead" the band with his hand jestures and nodding.....that sh*t may work with Cheesedog, but come on....these guys have been playin' in the "Same" band as you for 40 years...the same songs too....so cut it out already with this notion that YOU have to lead the band Bobby, I'm glad I didn't see any of that at the shows I went to...I know I'm hard on Bob but IMO he is the weakest link in the band right now and his monotone singing does no justice to Jerry's tunes...but I still love him as always and the band and will continue to see 'em.

ok..so I've loved Phil shows the past few years. Great music. This is the first time I've seen the boys together since The Other Ones. This was much better. Pure Dead..no Mickey nonsense. Yes, there is the hole that Jerry's absence creates. Its ok..the circle of life. The band is still cool. What really got me at this show was the drums. Billy and Mickey still really have it. Golden Road was rock, rock, rockin. Those drums brought back so many memories. I loved the show..I was wearing the shirt I got at the very last Grateful Dead Show...a Phil shirt Blue Light Rain..Unbroken Chain. It has a few holes in it. I hope they come back..after 200+ shows since 78' and various connections/mutual friends, kinda like family/brothers. I WISH I WAS A HEADLIGHT...ON A NORTH BOUND TRAIN!

I'm 18 years old and The negativity being posted on some of these reviews shocks me! For some of us (like me) this tour is the first time we have ever seen the dead! I never thought I would have the chance. There is an entire new generation of kids that loves this band. I saw my peers dancing their asses off at this show! We are all coming together for something and it's beatuiful. I am listening to music that was put out before I was born. I am collecting grateful dead CDs like it's my religion! This show was the most amazing experience of my entire life. The band, the people, it has changed my life. It was such a treat to meet you guys, all of you. Never have I been so accepted by older people. We were all there for the same reason and that was to get down!!! Peace and see you at Rothbury.

This show was great, and the other stuff I've heard from this tour is great. Of course, I have the songs that I like and songs that I don't particularly care for, but I can't realistically complain that they don't consult me for each setlist.
I don't understand why anyone has anything negative to say.
I have to say that the people complaining about what's missing in Garcia's absence are wasting their opportunity to enjoy what is happening right in front of them. If you're going to a Dead show expecting Garcia, here's a news flash - he ain't going to be there. Don't live in the past. Weir, Lesh, Hart, and Kreutzmann are all still here to be making music in their sixties, Garcia isn't. The different lineups since 1998 have all breathed new life into the music, and the band keeps pulling out older stuff that hadn't been played in decades. Everybody knows the band was pretty stale in 1994 and 1995. Whether it's Steve Kimock or Jimmy Herring or Warren Haynes, the new guitar players have all made their tours sound different and fresh. And anybody who has complained about their ability as lead guitarists simply isn't listening.

And by the way, Weir has been signaling the changes onstage for over thirty years - probably because he's the one in the middle of the stage. I'm sure if Phil, Billy, or Mickey - or Jerry - thought it was annoying they would have asked him to stop. People who bash Weir because he's not Garcia need to stay home and listen to a JGB album. Maybe then the tickets wouldn't cost so much for those of us who appreciate the fact that these guys are still making the best live music you can see anywhere. If you're expecting to have some kind of "Jerry moment", you're going to be disappointed, so why shell out $95.00?

I saw an interview with Phil a few years ago where he said if Garcia wanted to still be here making music, he would be. Therefore you should be complaining about Jerry - not Warren or Bobby.

Hey all Chicago lovers...listen to the forum show. Face it...the chicago shows were butt average...just like every other year when compared to other shows of that tour.

CG, Wisconsin
hey mr. cg from wisconsin. that's a pretty broad generalization...all chicago shows???? maybe you are not old enough, but try listening to some uptown shows from the late 70's and early 80's. and hey, I thought the 5-5-09 show was real good. what are your complaints?

Andy, Chicago
Greetings all.

I'm quite the music lover.....I dig into all kinds of obscure things, and I certainly frequently hear multiple works credited to one artist.

Comparing a given work to others seems rather narrow-minded to me. Always has.

No two pieces of art are completely alike.

Band members come and go. The people that remain change as the Wheel spins. And there's certainly no intent on every performance being an exact replica of each other.

Every performance has its own vibe. The sounds are never identical. The atmospheres differ from place to place, from decade to decade.

All that said, I'm not a hard-core follower; I'll generally catch one show during a US tour that includes either the Chicago area or Deer Creek at Noblesville. (I also caught "Phil Lesh & Friends" at the University of Illinois a number of years ago.) So perhaps some of you do know something I don't.

Right now, basically, what I know is this: The 5-5-09 show was frickin' awesome. (Does HTML work here? I'll find out, I guess...) Atmosphere of peace and love? Check. Kind of quirky choice for an opener? Check. Rollicking "Golden Road"? Check. Masterfully done epic songs like "Weather Report Suite," "Throwing Stones," and, always one of my favorites, "Unbroken Chain"? Beauty. I actually welled up a bit during "Unbroken Chain," as well as "I Know You Rider" and "Brokedown Palace," something I don't ever recall doing at the other shows to which I've been (even though one of the Deer Creek shows of years passed also featured "Weather Report Suite" and "Unbroken Chain"). (I don't do any kind of drugs, by the way. I am and always have been sober. If I could drive stick, I'd be THE designated driver.)

I will admit without hesitation that the "AllState Arena" is, for lack of a better word, crap. Which came first, the arena or O'Hare? And, if it was O'Hare, whose idea was it to put an arena right beneath the departing airplanes? Surely they would have anticipated the problems with acoustics that that would create. They got the sound of the planes blocked out; now they just have to work on the acoustics inside the building. The other problem my party had was that, with spilled beer everywhere, it was nearly impossible to get down the stairs after the show without getting hurt. It was like walking on billiard balls. And getting hit in the side by a pickup truck when we fell. One of us may not lose the bruise for a while yet.......

.....Where was I.....the Dead, yeah. Great show by a great band. Give them credit; they know what to do with what they're given.

Well, it's a little past 3.30 in the morning now, and I'm spacing. Peace.

Cheshire Adams, Chicago
Hey CG, did u actually go to this show, or do you just sit around looking at setlists and decide exactly how the show went in your own mind. These shows were both badass, the band was feeling a great deal of emotion. The experience was far from average, the crowd was more psyched than I had ever seen a crowd before. I suppose you do not have the capacity to embrace what a dead show is as a whole though, and could not channel into what the band and the rest of the crowd were feeling. FACE IT? oh excuse us for being enthusiastic about the chicago shows, shame on us, let's listen to the forum shows and feel that we had a bad experience just because you said so. Listen to the 2002 allstate other ones show and tell me that is average. We all had a righteously kick ass experience at the dead in Chicago...too bad that your crappy lame attitude keeps you from understanding

Awsome Show! From the first notes of Dancin' you could tell it was going to be a good night. A really solid show. I had a great experience at these Chicago shows. It was fun with the whole family. I am still listening to the CD recordings in my car.-Got my chips cashed in.
The first set was a ALOT of fun, and the second just kept lifting us higher. They pushed the music beyond. Phil's doing a great job singing. Always love hearing a ripping Unbroken Chain. Funkiest Drums i've ever heard. Bob steps up big on all the tunes. The pink strat-like guitar is to cool, old school baby. By the time they got to 'I Know You Rider' the places energy level was somewhere above O'Hare airport. There's no better encore than 'Brokedown Palace' at this point. What a way to spend Cinco de Mayo.

EVERYBODY'S DANCIN

These shows fail to all the shows I saw. Maybe you chicago folk should try to see some shows outside shitty chicago.
