well, the home team won last nite! I thought friday's show with that massive cold rain was gonna be tough to beat - saturday was a show of shows! big time rocknroll - songs rhythmically perfect with a drums segment second to none
phils lead into the other one; feathering into uncle johns; starting with satnite/goodlovin; and Revolution!!! one of the best shows ever! took awhile but warren fills the spot well.....i know they played samson to tear down the spectrum but lets start a rumour the dead will do newyears at The Spectrum

Epic legendary performance to say good bye to the Dead's East come home away from home!! Best setlist of the 55 spectrum shows. So good it's hard to describe. So let the words be yours I'm done with mine.

I thought that it was a very solid show until after space. Then it was out of this world. The Dew was awesome, Stephen was great and Revolution was a good surprise. After this, I thought that they would do one more short song and then the encore since it was approaching 11 pm (the normal concert witching hour). I was wrong...Help>Slipknot>Franklin's was a total surprise and extended the show for 30 minutes.
The two shows were a great way to tear down the Spectrum.

It was a great, high energy show that will stick with us for some time. The first set built from the opening bars to a huge close with nothing lagging in between. The second set was pure rock, with the only down point when they seemed a little lost coming out of drums into a weak bit of space and wandered a bit during the early parts of Morning Dew. However, they did pull it out and built to a tremendous finish. Given the high energy of the set I expected them to finish with a mellow number, but, of course, they had to close with "Tear this ol buildin down!"
My first Spectrum GD show was May 78 with many fine ones in between. This was a great way to help close out this venue that, despite cramped, outdated quarters, always manages to produce memorable show.s

so i'm fifteen years old, this was my first dead show, and i was completley blown away. WOW! i knew it would be awesome, but morning dew, st. stephen, cumberland blues, franklin's tower, and uncle john's band made it epic! Revolution was such a pleasant surprise-i don't think i'd ever heard a dead cover of it! can't wait until the next one. now i understand what everyone was talking about.

It was good. Poor segue into Franklin's. Revolution is lame. Fun time, but the rest of the reviewers are over-hyping. The setlists are good because they have busted every song under the sun, post-jerry. Also, Samson was not well played. The show was good.

Alright - I will be the first to admit I am the most critical Head around when it comes to shows. I just finished the two night run at the GOD AWFUL house they call the Spectrum, the toilet bowl of arenas. Here are my honest thoughts:
1) The Spectrum is a great acoustic place where the boys loved to play and broke out tons of great tunes. It is a dump though. The venue across the street would have much better as it is clean, has better facilities. That being said, it would be hard to see the Dead playing across the street with one of their favorite venues still standing. Venue: C+
2) Friday nights show was good, maybe just alright. Highlights: Alligator->Caution, Cold rain and Snow, Friend of the Devil (one of the best I have heard in the last 8 years), and the playing opener (although it was extremely loose and the band was having issues for the first 4 songs on all the equipment). Lowlights: WEAK Box of Rain, Hard to Handle was, well, Hard to Handle. Rest of the show was mediocre at best but any show is a good show. Warren was entirely tooo loud at the end of the second set and you could not even hear Bobby sing Sugar Mag (sunshine) some times.
3) Saturday Night: Wow what a huge f'ing difference. They were on the whole night. Probably something to do with XM/Sirius broadcasting the show. Ste list was nice with a ton of suprizes. John's criticisms above is a little harsh. The Boys were on. Samson was great!!! Franklin segue was poor, but these guys are in the 60's for Christ sake. Revolution was really fun. Warren did well on that.
It looked like the band was having fun instead of just going through the motions. The crowd was super high energy and the show had the feel of a mid 80's kind of gig.
4) Warren is no Jerry. Not even close. He is off kilter and many times too loud and overbearing for the Band. I think you take him out or tone him down.
5) OTHER THAN THAT...CHICAGO AND WEST, ENJOY, YOU MAY BE SEEING THE LAST OF THEM TOGETHER. you probably have a china Rider, Terrapin, scarlet/fire, lost saint in your future!
Peace out -

Spectacular Spectrum!!! The boys rocked that place for two days. There were a few low-lights for the show but great overall. Went to the show in WB, Pa and wasn't too impressed, having been to quite a few shows, maybe expecting too much for the $95 tickets. Philly on the other hand was the best show I've seen since Terrapin at Alpine. Thank you to the band for bringing this wonderful music and energy to us for so many years, and hopefully a few more yet!!!Why does everyone think Warren is trying to be Jerry? He tries to be Warren, you can tell by his sound. I think that they sounded great!!!The venue yes is outdated but how can you ignore the history there and play anywhere else in Philly? You heard the band, there was a special energy in that old building!! THANK YOU!THANK YOU!THANK YOU!!

Not much too say after the gushing reviews above, and I agree. Couple adjectives: Electric, Zoned, Fantastic, as good as I've ever seen at the Spectrum. Thanks - if the boys decide this is the last time, I can hang my hat on that one. Whew ....

I must say this show was the most incredible show I've ever witnessed in person. The energy and crowd were unbelievable. The setlist was absolutely spot-on. All songs were perfeclty played and unrushed. Damn--that "Cumberland Blues" and "The Other One": I just can't stop groovin'. Mickey, Bill, and the guys hit one out of the park tonight! God Bless you! Can't wait for the next show! Forever Grateful,

At 25 years old I am sad to say I never got to see a Dead show with Jerry. I have seen the guys with their solo bands many times and have enjoyed it. Saturday night at the Spectrum was beyond words!! My best friend (who is 7 months pregnant) and I couldn't stop dancing! Even the baby enjoyed, he was dancing in there right along with us! The whole second set was just a mind blowing experience! Then to encore with Samson & Delilah! What a wonderful end to a fantastic night and a great sounding venue! The crowd was so high energy Phil could hardly be heard making his Organ Donor speech! I think Jerry would have been pretty proud of those guys Saturday night. We are voting for new tour shirts to say, "The Dead... Just better together!" Haha! Hope to see them touring together again soon around here.
Thanks guys for the smile on my face that won't go away anytime soon!!

Saw them at MSG last week and didnt think they could top that. Dead wrong. This show was electric from the start with the Saturday opener like they had done a few years back here. Agree with all the other reviews, but nobody referenced how bad ass Mason was
Take me to the repo-man to pay back what is owed
If he's in some other land write it off as stole
I thought Samson was on and St Stephen rocked as did Mornign Dew (another philly fav). He's Gone obviously was a crowd favorite and performed well. Place was chaotic. No security. No beer (eventually). cash only. narrow corridors. bathrooms downstairs. TEAR THAT BULDING DOWN!
Happy to have seen the last 6 area shows in NYC/NJ and Philly and what an awesome show which may be the last one of all the boys together i see.

Warren was, is and always will be the wrong choice to try this experiment. Larry of Phil, Kimock, Mark of the dog, or my grandmother would be better than than govt mule playing chubster. His jams are noisy, screetchy, have no subtly, have no emotion, are mindless and horrible, no matter how unreal the setlist may seem. I say screw the setlist, just play well, play inspired, so I don't have to keep thinkin about Jerry for 5 minutes. It simply has to sound good, and it ain't, bc the lead guitar player bites. He may not bite with the allmans, he may be gods gift to the strings, but he does not belong trying to play a tender he's gone bc he cannot do it, it all sounds the same...
bad! so sorry

Neither Bernie Parent, Julius Erving, nor Jerry Garcia was in the house Saturday night. But the Dead and the audience delivered a game 7 playoff victory! Crowd AND the venue SO much better than Verizon--way less uptight. The reviewers are, as usual, right: the music played the band; Mason's opened new doors. Two Doos! Whoo Hoo!
Comparing Warren to Jimi--oops, I meant Jerry, is silly. Get over it.
So Glad We Made It.
Revolution over Come Together!

my first two shows at the spectrum will be the last two shows at the spectrum and i was not disappointed. at times i was in a state of reflection, as i spent many a good times in the spectrum as a little one. but the band knocked me out of those somber moments quickly and with gentle force. saying warren is jerry is nuts, hes warren. he adds a different dimension to the band; not better, different. in the 3 shows that i have seen so far (wilkes and double philly) somethings seems to be up with bobbys singing and /or mic. but an unplugged mic couldnt have ruined this celebration. it was great seeing fellow youngings in the crowd, as the majority were respectful and eager to kill their heads. 'i would tear this ol building down!'. goodbye spectrum.

on to the second night as me and my buddies got hall passes to travel for this epic weekend from our wives and children, we start the day at an Irish pub downtown and then go to the Mets Phillies game proir to the show.We enter the Spectrum for what will probably be the last time, except Pep might see Springsteen close the place. Tosty Rosty calls for a Saturday night opener and Bam,he gets it and they play it like tonight will be something special.Brown Eyed is just played so sweet and Little school gets the place humming, then the emotion songs start and are played wonderfully,Althea,Hes Freakin Gone and everyone is singing along, just so Cool, Jerry will never really be gone!!!Uncle Johns played and its another sing along, what a Great Philly crowd and I am a Mets fan!! They close with a Fantastic version of Masons Children. Holy S*** these guys are smokin Hot, everyone is abuzz for whats ahead in the 2nd set. Staying with songs everyone can sing to they open with Good Lovin/Cumberland Blues, at this point we all now know that this show will live with all of us forever!!! Crypical/Otherone into drums and space gives a small window to catch our breath as they are played so well and then BAM Morning freakin Dew, the Jerry National Anthem into my personal favorite St Stephen, I am now officially on some planet I don`t ever want to leave, then a Revolution and just when you think it can`t get any better, Help/Slipknot/Franklins played to the hilt and I can`t say enough about how good this band is and the sound at the Spectrum was Phenominal!! Way to go to all that contribute to a Real Freakin Good time for all at a SHOW. I can`t wait to see you guys at the Forum and Shoreline and remeber to all those that are Lucky enough to attend, the Band definitly feeds off the Audience energy, So Sing,Dance and Smile,Smile,Smile. God Bless the Grateful Dead!!!!!!!
Oh I almost forgot they close the Spectrum and Rosty called this one 2, with Samson so they can officially Tear that old Building Down!! A Perfect Concert and to anyone that did not have a Great experience, :) oh well

I haven't kept up with the Dead since the early nineties. Last show was a couplle of Vegas shows 17 yrs ago. Vegas is a shithole. I was in Philly for a conference and saw they were playing right after the Phillies game I had tix for, and decided to go. Man, what a show. St Stephen almost brought tears to my eyes... never seen them do that one (although I see they are playing it regularly nowadays). Cumberland rocked. And the singalong He's Gone was amazing. Not usually a Drums fan, but this one was great. These guys still have it. I danced in the aisle from the start to the end and beyond. Fantastic show.

first comes a time, was a beauty, though of course id rather hear jerry sing it, or anything else for that matter. show was hot, with a few minor flubs here and there, what else is new. Was it just me , or were the cold rain and snow lyrics all messed up? i think they got the first half the verses right, but then finished the second part of them all with "run me out in the cold rain and snow" no "dont wanna be treated this old way", etc. maybe i was spun, but i think im right. nice to here it though, been missing it since......??????

Well what can say that wasn't stated above?? I thought Jeff had his best show of the 3 I have caught thus far on this tour. He seemed to play with purpose and enthusiasm. He definitely got me off. Great time in Philly, I'm sad that this tour is now over for me as the last show in Philly was by far the best I have seen the band play without Jerry.
jim, richmond
had to add my 2 sense.....after 14 years of different combinations what you saw on saturday night was the best version of the post-jerry dead....nobody will play like jer but that rhythm section of weirleshhartkreutzman has finally landed on a guy that has the presence and soul to hang....he plays different but they have the trust/confidence in him to make it happen.......they used to follow jer down those dark alleys of musical exploration and now they have accepted warren as someone to add to the exploration...... this is big boy circuit rocknroll - enjoy it while it lasts!
brian, philly
1st show miami 10/87. 2nd show Miami 1994. I didn't "get it". 3rd show Scranton '04 - that's the one that hooked me. You can read my review of that show. 5/1/09 and 5/2/09 solidified what I've been preaching for the past 5 years. The "current" Dead are a gateway to the past. They are current - they will bring new members to the tribe. They got me, they will get others. Respect to Warren.
jeff, malvern
what a set list. and what an even better performance. kicking myself for missing this one. but from the archive download it sounds like the best show of the tour. topping MSG which seems nearly impossible. im truely jealous to all who were able to attend.
joe, CT
DC and Cville were the best shows of the tour. Also, its sacreligious to play/sing morning dew without Jerry. What a hack effort.
