Well, we have been going to shows since the late 70's and we know not to compare to anything that had Jerry involved but last night was not firing on all cylinders. The show had little flow as evident of all the stops and starts after most tunes. Not many segway's and the band just never hit a stride. We were lucky to see 2 shows on the Taxi tour and they (especially Gramercy) blew last night away. I was thinking that they were holding back for MSG tonight... Hope so, see you all there
Laura and Bob, Bethpage
I completely agree with Laura and Bob from Bethpage. There was VERY little energy in evidence, and waaaaaay too much downtime. I couldn't believe they took a half hour break, came back and played for half and hour, and then there was a huge gap (in the dark, not a break) to wait for them to set the stage for something else. It was a 4 hour show with maybe 2 hours of music. I go back a long way, having seen my first Dead shows in 1970, and although it can never be the same without Jerry, this was by far the worst I have ever seen Phil and Bob. I felt they had no connection at all with each other or with the audience. The Ratdog concerts far outshone what I saw last night. One last whine: I know that the Dead are not a Greatest Hits band, and I wouldn't want them to be. But this show had so few old favorites it was really disappointing. If Laura and Bob are right, and they were "holding back for MSG" I am going to be one pissed off fan. I should have saved my money, as last night's show was basically a snooze fest. What a bummer. :(

well, i guess im glad NOT to have gone through the hassle of trying to feed this cash cow one more time.Seems as though i'm not the only one dissapointed in the new machine. If they lay another egg 2-nite i will be getting what i can for my spectrum tickets...I think they are already tired of it!!!!I hope i'm wrong but now the "magic"is so sar and few between that even they feel let down. They just have to dust those rusty strings of a few more times and head for home.enjoy this evening New York,I hope it's at least 1/2 decent!!!!

stop hating, stop going. the crowd doesn't want your negative energy. the setlists they are pumping out are amazing and last night was exception. Marilyn, that break is called switching guitars - maybe (despite your experience) you've never seen acoustic switch to electric? This is the best music there is - appreciate it or go wait for Ratdog if you want.
Phil, NC
no exception* - last night is no exception. To be clear I love the dog, any combo of Phil and Friends, DSO - any. I'm just glad others do as well. See you boys at Rothbury (and the dog at AllGood!!)
Phil, NC
Do they realize how many ppl left during that change? switching guitars usually doesn't take that long for a 50 piece band! All the electric stuff is still on the stage! Are you kidding me? My entire section cleared out which totally ruined it for me! I guess it doesnt really matter they got the $. I know every show can't be amazing but I also think a little more effort would've been nice! And all you messy parking lot ppl! Would it ever occur to you to bring a garbage bag or make an effort to put your trash in or even next to the can? Come on! I got sprayed with glass like 3 different times from cars running over beer bottles! Earth Day was this week too, but you would never know it. How depressing. That was probably my last show ever. At least in NY.

Marilyn and i must have attended different shows . they were simply amazing the band was so on time .the sound was great. warren rules!!!!!
Scott, bayside
nassau was sweet! songs from the soul way jamming warren is soaring get down & boggie stop complanning . the shakedown was gross!!!!!!!!! what is up with the tanks & no garbage care ,sad! what happen to keep the scence clean? enjoy the momenments they slip away .
rob, long island

After 9 shows (not counting the 3 free shows on 3/30/09) of the 22 (not counting Rothbury, which is not part of the original tour sequence, and which takes place after a significant hiatus from touring), this was the first show in which songs that had been played previously during the tour outnumbered songs being played for the first time on the tour. Still, after 9 shows, they have played 126 different tunes.
Haven't had a chance to listen to this one yet (I'm getting all of the officially released download sets from dead.net--I'll fill up my collection with audience recordings later), and I HOPE that the performance recorded at the mixing board is better than I fear it might be. The first several shows had excellent energy, and there is no question about it, it DOES sound very different than if Jerry were still with us, but different can still be good.
Much of the problem lies with the fact that the band members have been performing Grateful Dead songs separately for so many years now that they have developed different ideas about how the songs are best interpreted, and when those different interpretations are in conflict, the music can suffer. There is also the fact that this is a large tour, going through large cities, playing large venues, and the music has always been best suited for small and mid-sized performing venues. It is personal music, and it's difficult to be personal in a massive sea of humanity.
This set list is a wonderful assortment of songs, and I'm looking forward to hearing them on my car stereo when I burn the tracks to CD. I don't get to see the band in person until they hit Los Angeles next month, and I'm CERTAIN that they will NOT play everything that I want to hear them play that night, but this band is NOT the sort of group that has ever chosen ten "best" songs to play at EVERY show, surrounding them with three or four others chosen from a pool of ten more, so that only 20 songs get played in any given tour.
If there is ANYTHING that is disappointing me about this tour so far, it is that they have only OCCASIONALLY performed their small acoustic sets, and that there has been even ONE repeated song in those acoustic sets.

Let me tell you something.... not to take the mystery out of all this talk of the "magic", the magic is between you and the band. Were you all singing in the crowd? Did you give anything back to the band but your inflated expectations? The reason this wasn't great may be on you as well. Several of you that are complaining should have stayed in the lot and done a 5 for $20 on the n2o instead of bringin that attitude inside. I only went to Greensboro and C'ville but I will tell you the crowd was better in Greensboro and the band played very well. Try bringing a good friend or loved one and enjoy each other and the time there, create an atmosphere. I had the misfortune to sit next people criticizing the show in C'ville and I tried not to let it bring me down but I had to work at it. That is a drag to have to do. Please work on your own attitudes and maybe the band will pick up on your positive energy. Please dont muddy the waters with your negativity, this may be the last time and you're bitching about it. Unreal. I'd give anything to have had your shitty time with your expensive tickets.

Had an amazing time last night. Was never a huge a huge Warren fan but sounded good last night. Brown Eyed Women was awesome. And my favorite dead bootleg is from the From eqypt with love tour i think the second show when they play peggyo into looks like rain. and they did that last night and i could have left after that. ha. gdtrfb was awesome. i think we are getting a chinacat rider tonight. enjoy
Joseph Moloney, Rutherford, NJ
right off the bat the show had it's moments good and bad and I have worked as stagehand before at the coliseum and several times with the grateful dead and that acoustic change over should not have taken anymore than 10 minutes but could have probably been done in 5 minutes. the crowd seemed ok to me, I kinda of agree with Marc from crestline except, the thing I see is when they play together jerry is not there to fill in every hole that there is musically and jerry arranged all those melodies to fit his style and the rest of the band's style of playing so it can never be the same. "Everyone misses Jerry, He's Gone and nothing gonna bring him back"
Fred, NY
I was at the show and tried as hard as I could to be into it but the band was just way too disconnected, to themselves, the music and the crowd. The sets were disjointed and the sound in the 1st set was almost inaudible. The acoustic stuff was great to hear, no doubt, but should that have been the highlight of the evening? Dark Star was great to hear them jam into and the 3 part harmony was wonderful, but instead of just "teasing" lovelight and other one, which my brother and I both called, they need to rip it up.
I was so looking forward to this show for the last few months and was unfortunately disappointed, and that hurts me more than I can describe. It was fantastic to be able to spend the day in the lot chilling out going to a show, but the music is what it is supposed to be all about and it was just not up to snuff.
I have seen the boys plenty of times and I am sorry to say it may have been the last time, but then again I don't know!
ps - masterpiece was a treat and phil on peggy-o was sublime, but the real standout was Warren. Bobby needs to let go of that leash and let him go because that man can play! He lit up Easy Wind and Alabama. CBC!!!!
pps - Bobby - here's me taking you down a peg! (for d-luv)

I was there. The band I know and love was not... I had a great day... sunshine, happy hippies, parking lot, and good times... but the actual show was a disappointment. so very slow. so many breaks. they just weren't into us at all.... Can't express how it pains me that I wasn't at MSG tonight to hear my namesake...
shkedwnst, providence
would you listen to the pissing & moaning? Its NOT 1977 anymore......I saw nassau and msg...2 different and equally awesome shows....I don't know what some of you EXPECT.......I remember shows with Jerry that sucked; he was so sick.......that's the way this band is.....theyre not performing puppets for you pleasure.....for me and my two good friends we had a WONDERFUL SHOW
Bob, Yonkers NY
Anyone who says these shows are great are in fact doing a great dis-service to real fans. Please stay home and save your money as supporting this tired, weak estimated profits tour is only feeding a beast that is way off tack and way out of control.

LOL Phil, I have seen many instrument changes in my day, I am well aware of how long that takes when things are organized. The amount of time it took at the Dead show Friday night was ridiculous. It was very unprofessional, I was surprised they didn't say something to the audience about all the down time.
I was REALLY looking forward to this show, having seen both Rat Dog and Phil Lesh and Friends and being blown away by both. Especially Ratdog at Jones beach in 2007, who I thought absolutely amazing, I was on my feet the whole show and couldn't stop dancing. Silly me, assuming that Weir and Lesh together would be at least as good if not better. Particulalry because they hadn't toured together in so long, I figured they'd be really happy to join forces again and that it would show in their performance. Well that was not to be. The energy level was a 2 on a scale of 10. Almost all the songs they chose to play were the slow/bluesy ones. Neil, blaming the crows is silly in my opinion. I for one went with the intentions of dancing, singing and having a grand old time. But when the music is all slow, and the band members look bored it's pretty hard to get into it. I jumped up when they started the intro to Turn on Your Love Light, and sat down again in disappointment when they didn't actually play the song.
I know a lot of people who love The Dead feel defensive about my comments, but I don't mean to sound like I am attacking the band. Just stating the facts. It was a low energy show, and until Friday I have never felt bored at a Dead concert (or ratdog or phil & Friends) before. It truly seemed like they were phoning in this performance. If I didn't know they were capable of much more I wouldn't have felt so let down.

Wow, I am stunned by the negativity I'm reading here!
I was at this show, and I thought it was great. My seats were off to Warren's side of the stage, I had a great view of the band and the goings on (including the techs scurrying around during the break between the acoustic set and Alabama) and didn't get any sense of the band not connecting with one another, the audience, mailing in the performance, nor saving anything for MSG.
In fact, I'm listening to a stream of the show from the Internet archive as I'm typing this. Save a couple of vocal miscues by Bobby, the band was totally on.
My personal feelings from the show were: the Europe '72 opening pairing of Jack Straw and BE Women was inspired, and had everyone in my section on their feet and dancing. the follow up of the Fillmore West/East era tunes Easy Wind (Warren was Jerry on guitar and PigPen on vocals!) and Death don't was awsome. Probably the musical highlight from the first set. To be honest, I've never been a huge fan of Lost Sailor, I've often skipped over it when listening to tapes, but I thought the band nailed it here. It's a "had to be there" kind of song for me I guess. Saint of Circumstance jammed and had everyone on their feet again.
The acoustic set was fantastic, I loved it. Reckoning has always been one of my favorite GD albums, and it was nice to get a taste of it here. In fact, when they were setting up I'd swore I heard someone tease The Monkey & The Engineer - that's would've been a real treat! Phil's singing Peggy-O was one of his best vocals I've ever heard from him. And you know, Looks Like Rain has always been like Lost Sailor for me, but I think it greatly benefitted from the all acoustic setting and I really enjoyed it.
The highlight of the night for me was Dark Star - really jammed out and spacey. the Other One, Lovelight and Caution teases/jams were inspired. I also thought Rythm Devils was good, and GDTRFB kicked ass.
I wish I were going to the Meadowlands shows this week. The band sound great to me and I'd definitely go see them again.

Hey Marilyn from Valley Stream, you are not "stating the facts." You are simply stating your opinion, of which I completely disagree with. For me Friday nights show was blast. I thought it was beautifully explored show, and a wonderful prelude to a great weekend of music.
Ray, New York
Sure there were ups and downs, and, yes, MSG was smokin', but they are only human, remember? I think the people who left during the unplanned break were too drunk from tailgating like a football game all day in the heat.
I agree ... if don't like it ... don't go ... we are lucky they are still turning it out. THANK YOU!

... I personally LOVED the Easy Wind, Sailor/Saint, Look Like rain/Getaway .... though it wasn't the greatest Darkstar, but a bad Darkstar is STILL a Darkstar!
Wish Warren would sing Dear Mr. Fantasy ... he sounds so much like Brent ... takes me way back :-)

I flew in from Denver for this one and to me this was the most honest show. I reunited with family and freinds who I hadn't seen in 15 to 20 years. I don't know if it's the water out there or what but all that my friends did was fight and yell and complain. I broke out into tears on the way there and cried until Bobby reached out with that LOOKS LIKE RAIN. Don't blame the band for this one, Praise them for feeling the vibe.
And your'e right. This was a set up-for Saturday and I think it was a damn good one. After reuniting with my friends only to find out that this would be our last waltz, well it SURELY LOOKS LIKE RAIN.

wow, what an unexpected amount of negativity. but to each his own.
while this was my first of three consecutive shows this tour, it was my first dead show (not including DSO, phil and friends, and ratdog).
being only three when jerry passed, i was more than overjoyed to see phil next to bob next to mickey next to bill. jeff and warren being phenomenal additions.
its surprising the words Knockin' on Heaven's Door were not mentioned in any of the reviews here. i know i personally felt honored to witness the performance of a song unplayed since 2002. and what a song it was. as well as Paint My Masterpiece (unplayed since 1998). it was truely beautiful.
i really enjoyed the acoustic session, and the general bluesy feel, while different i still appreciated it for what it was, great music.
and songs like Brown Eyed, Dont Ease, Getaway, GDTR and Touch. not to mention phil's Peggy-O. were amazing.
while the performances at the garden kept a more traditional feeling, i was still was still more than GRATEFUL to witness the performance of the remaining members of my favorite band playing my favorite songs.
