What a cool show, lots of decades traveled in this one, Mr Charlie,Golden,Aiko and a Midnight hour, last time I saw that was NYE 1990. Looking so forward to the Philly shows. Maybe they can bring a St Stephen/NFA/St Stephen out of the closet, whatever they play I can`t wait to see them on the East Coast for the 1st time since 1991. Hey Now let the Music never Stop!!!!!
Blanch, San Diego
This show was not good. Even worse, it cost $95 to see this garbage. I think Bob has a room in his mansion that is filled with money that he dives and swims in just like Scrooge McDuck did on DuckTales. I will not pay a dime to see "The Dead", "The Other Ones", "Ratdog", or whatever name they are using to beat a horse that died nearly 14 years ago. Bob is getting more and more like Gene Simmons from KISS as each day passes. The real reason "The Dead" reunited was not because of Obama's inspiration. It was because their accountants told them they need to gouge their fans even more to pay for Obamas taxes on the megarich(themselves). Peace

first of all thanks to the tapers that have allowed this deadhead to download most of the first nine shows on the tour and i hsvr to say they sound incredible and i cant wait for the la show.
they dont sound like the grateful dead, ratdog or phil, as my good friend pete dowd says "it;s their interpetation"
as far as the neagtive reviews listening to the same shows i am, just realize, they dont have to do this, there not doing it for the money and i/m sure bob has a room in his mansion filled with something but i think its more of a
private stash .
bobby,phil,bill,mickey,warren and jeff
THANK YOU!

If i lived in Scranton, I would be bitter like Pat.
Checking out the 2 NY, NJ and Philly shows and was hoping for a Midnight Hour. Maybe it will repeat. Hoping for another Easy Wind. Warren rocked that, though nobody is Pig.
Listening to each of the shows thus far, Bob's vox seems off. Unsure if it is his mic or just softly talking the lyrics to the songs he doesnt get that fired up for - not unusual for him. Warren has sounded great and obviously Brent-esque. Jeff's keys have fit in well. Some of the jams from the 2nd Worcester show were kick ass.

Hey Scranton Pat Grinch, did you really refer to Scrooge McDucK? I know you're really into John Tesh and Yanni. Just relax. It's time for your nappy and sippy-cup. So if you can behave, you can watch The Wiggles later.

I'm a deadhead from way back when but the setlist at Wilkes-Barre just stank...sure there were a few highlights but at one hundred bucks a pop I want to hear Dead songs!!!! I can't say how disapointed I was after taking out so much time energy and money to make it to the show, if I wanted to see a Warren show I'd go to see Govt Mule (never), someone has got to give a wake up call to Bobby and Co that this whole fiasco with 100 dollar prices is pure highway robbery to people that have backed them up for years, and to top it off we don't even get to hear a good selection of songs, and believe me I'm open to odd choices....
Alphonzo007, Lackawaxen PA
My opinion of the show is just that: an opinion. It was based on these observations:
A. I saw the show in person
B. The setlist was terrible
C. The songs were performed without any energy or conviction
D. The tickets cost nearly $100 without the fees
The sum of these factors equal a terrible show that I witnessed/paid for. I am not alone in this viewpoint. I have seen nearly every combination of the bands that Grateful Dead members have performed in. This lineup at $100 a ticket is a total ripoff. Still don't believe me? Why are THOUSANDS of good seats available for every show?
By the way Jeff, I wouldn't be ragging on Scranton. Hoboken, NJ is Scranton with more crime.

Show was fine - not the best ever, but they obviously can't always be the best ever. Loved the first set, second set was OK. I too am looking forward to the Philly shows. Also, remember, the lineup is no secret, and the cost is stated up-front, so if you got a problem w that, don't go.
Mike, Elverson
Does the setlist REALLY matter? We have alll seen shows with fun setlists that SUCK. We have also seen setlists that were totally stock where the show was great.
A great setlist will not save a turkey of a show and if the band is playing well they can amaze us with Mary Had a Little Lamb->Three Blind Mice.
Another setlist observation: It IS cool that they are playing different stuff every night. That is highly preferable to seeing the same stuff every night. However, if they NEVER repeat ANYTHING they won't get any better...
Having said all of that, i agree that I wouldn't pay $100 to see this crap with a gun to my head (although I did listen to the Sirius broadcast and will again next time). I also agree that Bobby's vocals, especially on the Jerry songs, are irritating. I will say that he did nail Days in Worcester, though.

I was at the show and the Buffalo show the night before. I enjoyed them both. I LOVE the Americana section of the Grateful Dead songbook. Buffalo was Texas/Colorado, Wiles-Barre was New Orleans.
I enjoyed last night so much that if the jam in the middle of Midnight Hour hadn't fallen flat, I'd have called it epic. But that's just me, I tend to be open-minded and VERY much in the moment. It seems that a lotta folks have pre-judged this experience, thus creating a self-fullfilling prophecy. Getting back to the Midnight Hour, it looked like Bobby was trying to push Warren, but Warren didn't have any more to give.
I hope this lineup stays together, as I'd be real interested in hearing them navigate all the turns after they've been gigging for a year or so. And yeah, this band is like a stripped-down, hopped-up semi truck careening down a mountain. Sometimes they make the hairpin turns, sometimes they crash and burn. But hey, ain't that why we show up in the first place? To see if they make it, and to ride along to new paths of glory when they do?

All the haters should listen to the DC show-2nd Set
Dark Star> King Solomon's Marbles> D/S> Come together> Dark Star> Sugar Mag
Great set list and probably the best jammed 2nd set of the tour with excellent continuity.
As good as a lot of shows in the 90's.

Come-on everyone---you can't complain about song selection---anyone who has followed the Dead knows the quality/energy/jamming of the show is not reflected in the setlist. Sure we all want our favorite songs combined with the best jamming ever, but wish in one hand and %$#@ in the other........
Warren is my concern. He seems to be getting better as the tour progresses, but he isn't going for it like I think he should. I don't know whether he just can't or doesn't have the guts to really lead the jams yet or what. But these songs need some serious lead guitar jams. Even the tone of his guitar is wimpy---it needs to sear and scream not whatever it is I'm hearing.
I've some good moments so far and some real head scratchers, but I appreciate the effort and know that if Warren can kick it into gear, there could be some unbelievable experiences to come. So far, I'd give it a C+/B- overall. The scarlet->Fire had some good parts to it for sure. I really like the satisfaction too, but contrast that to the music never stopped and jack straw--killer songs that were starved of lead guitar power.
Anyway, I'm still hopeful that things will better as the tour progresses.
And Warren if you are reading this----Please GO FOR IT---Make that guitar scream and don't worry about you taking over the song---you are supposed to do it at times.

I saw Buffalo & Penn St. and I have to agree that Warren needs to hit those leads. I think we should all agree that this is not "The Grateful Dead" and nobody is going to replace Jerry. So enough Warren & Jeff hating and start to appreciate the line-up as is. And really, I can spend 100.00 and have a shitty meal in less than an hour. Be in Nassau Fri. PEACE.
MIKE, C-LAND NY
Well, just a few things to say about last night.I do agree that if bob can't deliver with conviction let someone else do it.I wish Mark had the vocal ability of warren because i think maybe he would do a much better job with the guitar work.Even the box was way slower and lacking the punch of older days.Highlights were Mr. charlie, short built to last and an o-kay dire wolf.warren did a 1/2 decent job with so many roads.unlike other posters i had enough, that is something i though i would never say.1 show $110 later i've seen enough of this band.I MISS JERRY to much to keep feeding this entity.Bring Mark on board.......It's like visiting your alzheimer ridden grandmother in the nursing home.I don't like to go there because I want to remember her the way she was.Not the way she is NOW!!!!

Was I at a different show? I thought that the show ROCKED!! I liked this setlist better than any other show so far on tour. I've been to many GD shows and other reincarnations since 84' and I cannot say I thought they were all gems, but this show was great. Fom the opening Mr. Charlie through the Box. Sure Bobby had some flubs, but hey he did that with the Dead and we (the crowd) loved it. Jerry is not coming back, enjoy what you have. I would rather Kimmock or Herring on lead, but Warren did the band justice. I was afraid he was going to try to bring the Allmans twang in heavy, but he didn't! Great job by all involved. Looking forward to both nights in Philly!!
Pat McD, Scranton
I am usually someone who will take any show and be happy just to hear the songs and see the the boys. Bobby could f@rt into the mike and I would like it, but I just thought this show was uneven. Sometimes they struggled to get on the same page. The ending of both sets seemd like it was a surprise to them. They had trouble starting some songs. It happens. It's still better than not having them.
Mel, Miflford, PA
I've listened to some live clips online and read all the reviews so far for this tour. I am headed to the Philly show on 5/1. I saw some shows back in the day and enjoy the Dead and it's members in any form. I have to say despite ALL the negativity I've seen related to this tour in the reviews, I am still pumped to see The Dead. I am worried many "fans" have missed the whole point and acquired attitudes that are dissappointing. I have no problem paying $100 for a ticket to see the band responsible for some of my fondest memories of live shows and just music in general. It's all what you make of it.
Mike, Baltimore, MD
for jerrys sake!!! all you heads with the negative reviews need to do some serious self reflection. we all love and miss jerry but let us not forget that even he had his off nights and occasionaly sounded like crap. we shoud all be very grateful that the boys are on tour again and doing their best to provide unique set lists. after all this could be the last time! as for the $100 tix, i remember back in the 80's when $30 seemed outrageous. i believe this problem is what is commonly refered to as inflation. maybe you dont realize that shows cost an ass ton of money to produce. so hey hey come and join the party every day! and to the boys.... thank you for a real good time! no my love will not fade away!
p.s. bobby if you are reading this a brother esau would be sick!!!
p.s. bobby if you are reading this a brother esau would be sick!!!
arturo, st. louis, mo.
i think $100 to see the boys is way beyond inflation - it's a straight up jack, and i've seen front row tickets for the chi shows going for $800 on ebay - and selling. wtf?
i refuse to pay that much, but i've listened to the boards from each show of the tour so far, and while i've definitely heard some stuff that makes me smile, it's not really even comparable to the '04 summer tour - and i'm pretty sure tickets that year were between $40-$50.
main difference between now and '04? jimmy - no question. his guitar fired warren up and brought everything together.
would i go if someone miracled me? you bet. would i have fun? you bet - regardless of what songs got played or how they played em.
i love the grateful dead, the other ones, the dead, whatever you want to call them, but the steal your cash/estimated prophets tour was a big turn in the wrong direction in my opinion.
take it for what it's worth i suppose.

On paper, the setlist was OK, but I agree that the show was delivered with a lack of energy you usually feel at a Dead show, especially when it cost $100. I went to the PSU-OBama show (great show), saw the free show at Roseland (great show) and saw shows on the 2002 and 2004 tours, and I'd have to say this ranked as the worst I've seen. Maybe the price tag set my expectations too high. Here's hoping they close out the Spectrum in style.

well my wife and i were disappointed with this show --but we bought the soundboard and of course it sounds better without the fugging ECHO from the back of the Wilkes-barre wachovia can't-hear-ya arena
actually she got psyched with the "Mr Charlie" opener and said "they are rockin' --as good as 'China Cat--> IKYR' from the Buffalo show" but unfortunately the first set went downhill from there
I agree with the critique of the FIRST SET setlist-- too many country cowboy songs and almost every song had lyrics about shooting people-- weird least common denominator for the set-- not to mention both dead songs that refer to charlie manson
"Stagger Lee" was a lousy song structurally even when the Jer was leading and singing it
"Liberty" was ok but they changed the rhythm to it sosomehow it seemed like a gene-spliced Iko over broken arrow
add a sleepy really sleepy "Candyman" and we were sitting on our seats listening [though seated on the floor] most of the first set
"Me and my Uncle" actually was a good version for the most played song in dead history
i liked warren on "Tennessee Jed" but "Dire Wolf" truly is not a closer --never was never will be and this version was questionable
SO Alphoso007 my wife [and to a lesser agree i] agree that the first set setlist was poor......so poor that basically we felt confident they couldn't possibly do worse --and they didn't in the second set of course
"Golden Road' really cooked and the jams were nice
"Revolution" well let's just say I'll take Jerry 1985 at the Spectrum with the GD for that song --the dead just didn't quite get it and beatles are TOUGH to cover
"Weather report Suite part 1" was so quiet i thought bobby's mic broke and it sounds sweet and sleepy on the board CD and the band needed a wake-up call --which we got from a smokin' "IKO IKO" and jeff i don't care what they say i play piano (as you know) and you can jam that song superbly --and "Sugaree" best [to me Hornsby is the best of all time]
sorta funny when drums/space is a highlight but it was that kinda show and "Caution" really rocked --for me that was Warren's highlight of the night
"So Many Roads" we were asleep on our chairs again.....
and "Midnight Hour" i dunno i guess i've heard so many great GD versions of that song it was good but....
in a word this show was UNEVEN
well anyway we are looking forward to any simulcasts and the philly shows and if i can find a buddy i sure would consider this tuesday at the Izod....
remember:
up and down dead is better by far than no dead at all !
TURN IT UP BOARDMEMBERS AND GET BOB'S VOCAL MIC EQUALIZED BETTER AND LET'S ROCK IN PHILLY THIS WEEKEND !

I really did'nt care for the show..The song selection in my opinion left a lot to be desired. And the show just did'nt seem to take off..I've seen alot of shows over the years and maybe I'm just getting picky.?.? Maybe they should have booked a closer show the night before rather than that haul from Buffalo..

You always take out what you take into a show.Huge music fan of all kinds. Will not sugarcoat any show.Everyone is day to day,but to see people thinking they we're seeing something hot when it's not is unbearable sometimes.Tired,TIDE!!!!!! No vibe at this show. Can't expect to play Buffalo 6hrs away and be awake to play the next night.Song selection???Always been a fan of how they play not what they play.No more reunions!!Keeps the solo projects or produce.Don't mind spending $30-40 to see the Dog in a nice theatre and getting a clunker..But to spend $100 to see the unspirited playing is a joke!!!!People trying to pretend the show was good just because they spent that kind of money is ridiculious!I hope atleast a few shows were more spirited.I rarely leave shows early if ever but I was ready to go 5 songs into this one.Kept waiting for the groove to start and it never happened..Nothing musicly hot about this show at all,and I have no problem with that..I do have a problem with the band biting off more than they can chew with the tour schedule just to cash in..Know your limitations!!All the best to everyone and have a safe tour!!!

"What we got here-Is failure to comunicate" Here in lies the problem. It isn't a matter if the show was good or bad. We've all seen both. The fact is that we are looking for somthing that just isn't there anymore. (JERRY) Maybe, Maybe, someday, somewhere. They will find a guitar player who along with themselves will find that need harmoniess affliction and explode on stage. Smiles on all theri faces. Getting lost in the jams. Laughing as Bob or Phil try to Drag our old friend from his resting place in the strtings of his guitar only to watch him slip Further while he drags us all along merrily. FUCK.... I miss that shit.... So my friends, It is what it is. Let's enjoy it while we can. If ya wanna complain lets talk about the lot...lol I miss you Jerry, Love Crazy Sweeney from Scranton Pa. P.S. I missed all the shows because I had a reunion of my own with my old friend booze and ended up half dead in a car accident....So take your complaints and shove em up your ass!!!!
