The boys are playing great, but Jeff is so weak. Remember Hornsby on the early tours. Jeff adds nothing to the mix. Its diappointing since he has been playing these songs for years. Adequate should not be tolerated.

CG- really? I don't know what shows you're listening to man.
I hear a beautiful organ fill that fits in perfectly. Sure, he's not over the top, screaming out Brent vocals, tinkling little synth tunes that don't fit with the style they're playing...
Listen to the Milestones from 4/18 and tell me he's adding nothing to the mix...

Exactly, adequate. His playing can't even be compared to Brent, Bruce, or Vince. He has a solo here and there, but otherwise I can't here him at the shows or on the CD's afterwards.

Its just what I'm hearing. I have heard the same from a lot of people. I have seen a lot of shows and will continue to see more. I think its fair that someone else could play keys and there would not be any drop off. As stated before, the boys overall are playing great. Knuckelhead?? You child.

CG, Charlottesville
Beg to differ. I've seen them all including Pig, and Jeff is by far the best keyboard player they've ever had. At both Worcester shows he stepped up time and time again.

spider, ledyard
Spider, I respect that you have seen them all. I have not. But the best ever...that is a huge statement. I would love to hear comments from others on that one. I'm out.

CG, Charlottesville
CG- Jeff is the most talented their is in the marketplace right now. I have done a few gigs with him over the years. He is a standout and you should appreciate his efforts. He is also a helluva of golfer as well. He plays to a 5 handicap and can break par on any given day from the tips of some of the most challenging courses. I still smoke him in h-o-r-s-e. Glad to see most of you are enjoying this tour. Peace!

Bruce Hornsby, Williamsburg, Va.
Bruce...Thanks for your input. But Spider said Jeff was better than you. I know Jeff is a better golfer, but better keyboardist/pianist? Yeah...having fun. Wish you would have sat in at DC or Cville.

hey I thought the show in Buffalo last night was a lot of fun and very very enjoyable from the killer music to the amazing atmosphere. The band sounded amazing in my opinion.
on another note I've got a friend who believes that "he thinks he can play a better eyes than Bobbie..." What did every1 here think of that Eyes lastnight? I thought it was pretty amazing!!

TG, Toronto, ON
I think that all of the keyboard players have been great. Sounds good from up here!

Jerry Garcia, Heaven

Thanks for the great review guys. Really got a feel for what I missed. On a more serious note, how was the nitrous scene at Buffalo, kicked ass in Albany.

I'm a seasoned veteran since '86. After being a bit underwhelmed by the lack of x factor in Albany, I'm glad I trucked up to Buffalo where the sound and synergy was much better imo. Admittedly, I much preferred the setlist in Buffalo as well but as we all know it's not what's played but how it's played. For me the x factor was alive and well as it was at the Penn State show in October and where it was lacking in Albany imo.

Sure Bobby flubbed the lyrics several times (in Mama Tried alone) not to mention Bobby McGee and of course Truckin' (has he ever got those right?) and Phil didn't sing any whole songs and it was sloppy in parts but I thought overall the whole night was great!! Phil sang alot of backing vocals and the synergy of the band was excellent.

My highlight was probably my 1st Bobby McGee (of over 60 times of seeing Bobby). 1st set highlights icluded TLEO, Mama Tried, Loser, It's All Over Now w/ a brief but great drum break, and Big River to close the 1st set. The Playin' jam was great even if the segue to Bobby McGee was a bit ragged. This was classic country night w/ Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson songs played. Only the Dead could play these artists on such a trippy night of music;)

Drums/ Space was excellent especially the VERY trippy space that harkened back to the early Acid Tests!!

I assumed we would get Phil on at least a verse of Maggies Farm but it was not to be w/ this great new arrangement. Eyes was solid as usual w/ Phil laying the foundation as only he can. And enhanced when he sang his verse. I wish he'd sing this whole song and many many more to "boot";) I'm assuming he can't or he would.

Playin' reprise puncuated the Skull F*Ck themed night. (Mama Tried, Bobby McGee, Playin'..etc). I believe I caught a brief Truckin' tease in the 1st Playin' jam but they saved it for the encore. What a long strange trip indeed. Thank you boyz for all the memories. Come back soon now, ya hear?;)

Brett Burt, Rochester, NY
Shakedown was nuts, space was trippy/trancey as hell, nitrous was abundent

Nate P, Buffalo
I was very impressed I have seen shows since the seventies and the band keeps evolving you cant compair a show you saw in the 60s 70 s 80 s or 90s to what they are doing now one person here put that he didnt like keyboard or it didnt compair to hornsby thats like compairing cats and dogs differnt time differnt sound this is not the old jerry pig pin brent GD but what they have done is nothing but exciting to just be there and still have the same feeling as I did my first dead show that in its self is worth the price of addmission also I was in seventh row and I cant remember where I saw phil smiling from open to end also micky and bill playing like they were ment to were there scew ups quite a few miss cords mised beats but isnt that what it is all about I have seen them all on there own including jerry w/jgb band and having what is left still come to play and play hard is still a treat I hope we can see more but yet if I never saw them together agin they are memeries I will never forget. p.s. i will see them agin have tickets for two more shows and considering doing the hole westcoast leg peace

longstrangetrip, cleveland
To be perfectly honest this show was intense. The boys got it going on, the trust level is high and they are really letting it all hang out there. No way to fully review each song its seared in but the words to decribe it have not surfaced yet.

This is not Ratdog, its not PnF's, its not Gov't Mule. This is THE DEAD.

The lot would be great if the real family would just run off the fakes.

My hopes is they will find the time to do this again. Disney has nothing on these guys they are the true magic.

Jon, Rome NY
Great Show.

I: Promised Land, They Love Each Other, Mama Tried, Loser, Smokestack Lightnin, Stella Blue, It's All Over Now, Big River
II: Playin in the Band > Me and Bobby McGee > Loose Lucy > Ramble On Rose > Drums > Space > Maggie's Farm > Eyes of the World > Playin in the Band (reprise)
E: Truckin
Only ''They Love Each Other''; Only ''It's All Over Now''; Previous ''Mama Tried'' 6/28/2003 [72 shows]; Previous ''Promised Land'' 7/11/2003 [63 shows]

Promised Land opener was rockin.
Smokestack Lightning was freakin on fire!!! The whole place was scwhoopin round and round.
Stella was spectacular. Warren is very good in this role of lead guitar for the Dead.
Playin, Lucy, Eyes were all very good. The band was doing some really cool time signature stuff. Half the band playing one time and the other half another. Really trippy stuff.

As for Jeff, he is so very talented. Yes, he is very much on :PAR: w/ Mr. Hornsby.

He sat in for the entire drum sequence. He's so far from adequate. Classically trained, never being exposed to the Dead music until he joined Ratdog. Great human being as well. Have played a few rounds w/ him, and Bruce ain't lying, he's a legit 5.

Personally, I didn't realize how much I missed the Dead experience. Drums/Space was phenomenal. I don't know why the members would play in any other band. The sum of the Dead's parts is so much greater than anything they do on the solo tip.

Thats just my humble opinion.

I had a fantastic time and my expectations for the show were far exceeded.

Sounds to me like the boys are rounding into shape. Personally I like Jeff but sometimes he does seem to fade into the background. I'm sure he stepped up on the Golden Road they did the other night. Enjoy the tour and it is good to see them playing together and would love it if they would hit some smaller venues.

Michael , Margate
what a long strange trip it was! The first set was killer.
it's all over now was very tasty, and smoke stack rocked. the only downfall of this show was the length of the intermission, what a buzz killer... all in all the boys are back!!!!
