Reviews
This show was just ridiculous on so many levels. Do these guys NOT realize that people want to come to shows to hear a ROCK concert? It was a different thing when you were hearing 10-12 shows per tour and then a show like this would be acceptable on some level, but most people these days are catching 1-2 shows and they should bring out the hits. And besides the lame set list complete with obscure songs and a f-in Birdsong REPRISE, the Worcester Centrum is the worst venue ever. Total mayhem and long lines everywhere. Not sure whether to blame the poor sound and vocal quality on the band or on the venue, but blame must lie somewhere. For $100 a ticket, these guys should bend over and GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT!!!!

Jen Snider, Newton, MA
I wasn't at show. am going to morrow. but hen i read the first set llist i was very bummed i wasn't there. Feel like a stranger is one of their best openers. goin down the road nice and i love the playfulness of duprees and ALTHEA fuckin LOVE ALTHEA...and beautiful birdsong..It's just tough to imagine without Jerry. And then a China---}Rider. I just love that set...soooo with i was there. what did they do sett II?

Mr Mojo, westfield, ma
i gave my tickets to this show away...from a selfish point, what a mistake! from an altruistic point, i'm glad to have given a new head the opportunity to hear one of the best shows ever! i listened to it on sirius, glued to my computer. amazing setlists, amazing energy, exactly the songs i wanted (though i wanted them for sunday when i am actually going :-)
jen above, not sure what you are looking for if you aren't looking for a show like this. perhaps you don't know the dead and you were looking for truckin? and as far as worcester being the worst venue, well, you live in mass so duh! didn't you know that before you bought your overpriced ticket. no sympathy here.
and mr mojo...here's set2:
terrapin! an amazing one. also birdsong reprise, saturday night. encore johnny b goode
teased wheel a lot but hopefully we will hear that tonight.
have a great show!

Not bad, Special thanks to Worcester PD for not bustin our balls all night, Stranger--Sat Night/JB Goode was totally predictable, but birdsong was a huge treat, I thought sat was going to be the hot show but the teases indicate that the best is yet to come. The Wheel is coming. See ya tonight, You'll recognize me. I'm the old hippie in the tie-die.

Jeff, NH
Wow, so much fun. First set was great - Stranger tight with high energy,GDTRFB in the two slot was amazing-felt like an encore. Mountains wan't great but Dupree was fun and Althea was on fire. Bird song was good and China/Rider was a huge closer. Second set Dancin was high energy and jammed out. Milestones was mello, but a nice surprise and then an epic and flawless Terrapin. Drums was supersonic with Mickey standing and just wailing on the drum wall. From there things slipped a bit with just a too melow and somewhat inaudible Days Between and then the expected and uninspiring extended Birdsong reprise. Closing out with Saturday Night and JB Goode brought all the energy back big time with cresendo's of power and waves of sound. All in all a very respectable show. My friend called Stranger on the first note and the encore as well. Never did find our ride in the endless parking garage maze but managed to flag a cab to the motel. SCARLET/FIRE tonight!!!

Jen Snider, WE ARE THE PEOPLE AND WE GOT WHAT WE WANTED!! GREAT setlist, GREAT sound, GREAT energy.

Was this your first show maybe?

Mason's Child, Anytown, USA
Loved the music, it is great to see the boys enjoying themselves and feeling comfortable enough to go out 'there' and to bring us with them and back again. Really loving the improvisation, not enjoying the people who complain about it especially as it is going on. This is Grateful Dead music and they are laying it down how they always have. This is not Phil & Friends, this is not Ratdog, it is The Dead and it has been a long time coming.. On another note. The DCU center is the absolute worst. 1000 people in line for a bathroom with four toilets, vendors out of water and beer at the set break...? Really? This place was fully unprepared for what hit it and really should not show up on any tour itinerary again. Just awful!

Stoltz, Andover
Always great to see and hear the boys for sure. The music always different and evolving. I thought it was a very mellow and jammy evening. Some good moments for sure - Milestones into Terrapin then rhythm devils was the highlight of the evening for me. It didn't seem to me that they ever really got it going though, even on the few normally rockin tunes. Maybe it was that the sound in the house left a lot to be desired (at least where I was sitting - sec.125 lower bowl). Not really clear or loud enough in my opinion. And yes, that venue is the worst. I experienced the selling out of water/beer/wine after waiting l5 minutes in line. Maybe it was better not drinking anything to avoid having to wait in line 15 minutes to use the bathroom. I don't remember it being that bad 20 something years ago at some of my first shows. And though the tickets are expensive at 100 bucks to be down low, my only regret is that I'll only see 1 stop on the tour. I wish I was going back tonight!

Greg, Somerville, MA
I listened on sat. radio and was very impressed! The show sounded great. The GDTRFB was fantastic and the T. Station... WOW! I can not wait for Philly.

David , PA
I think the boys were playing well, I just think the Centrum SUCKS and the sound quality was pretty poor. I was sitting directly behind the soundboard, usually the best spot, and sound was not good.
Anyone have any insight why Bobby split singing on so many songs with Warren last night? Why didnt Phil or Bobby sing Terrapin?????

Adam, Boston
Excellent set list--looking forward to downloading the soundboard from dead.net! Anybody who thinks that Terrapin Station, China Cat Sunflower, I Know You Rider, Goin' Down the Road Feeling Bad, Johnny B. Goode, Feel Like a Stranger, Althea, Bird Song, One More Saturday Night, Dancin' in the Street, Dupree's Diamond Blues, and One More Saturday Night are "obscure" probably spends more time listening to Neil Sedaka than to The Grateful Dead.

WHY would the setlist here separate "Lady With a Fan" from "Terrapin"? They are merely parts of the greater whole "Terrapin Station," and should only be separated if played out of context. I sincerely doubt that the set listings on dead.net are going to separate them, and since I cannot recall a single instance where "Lady" or "Terrapin" is played by itself (as opposed to the component pieces of "Weather Report Suite" and "That's It For The Other One") the set list separation is irrelevant.

If anybody is counting, with five shows completed to date, The Dead have performed 77 different songs on this tour, with the ONLY "repeat" songs being Space and Drums (neither of which is EVER a "repeat" of a previous performance).

Among the 100+ MAJOR (to Dead fans, dear Jen Snider, this is our version of "hits") songs that have YET to be played on this tour:

Alligator, And We Bid You Goodnight, Around and Around, Attics of My Life, Baba O'Riley, Beat It On Down the Line, Big Boy Pete, Big River, Black Muddy River, Black Peter, Black Throated Wind, Brokedown Palace, Built To Last, C. C. Rider, Candyman, Corrina, Cryptical Envelopment, Dark Hollow, Deal, Dear Mr. Fantasy, Death Don't Have No Mercy, Deep Elem Blues, Desolation Row, Dire Wolf, Don't Ease Me In, Easy to Love You, El Paso, Eyes of the World, Fire on the Mountain, Forever Young, Friend of the Devil, Gimme Some Lovin', The Golden Road (To Unlimited Devotion), Good Lovin', Good Morning Little Schoolgirl, Goodnight Irene, Greatest Story Ever Told, Hard To Handle, Hell In a Bucket, Here Comes Sunshine, Hey Pocky Way, I Will Take You Home, I'm a King Bee, Iko Iko, It Hurts Me Too, It Must Have Been The Roses, It's All Over Now, It's All Over, Baby Blue, Jack-a-Roe, Just a Little Light, Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues, Keep Your Day Job, Knockin' on Heaven's Door, Lazy Lightning, Let the Good Times Roll, Liberty, Little Red Rooster, Looks Like Rain, Loose Lucy, Loser, Lost Sailor, The Main Ten, Mama Tried, Man Smart (Woman Smarter), Me and Bobby McGee, Me and My Uncle, Mexicali Blues, Might as Well, The Mighty Quinn, Mission in the Rain, Money Money, Morning Dew, My Brother Esau, Mystery Train, Next Time You See Me, Nobody's Fault But Mine, Oh, Babe It Ain't No Lie, On The Road Again, Operator, Picasso Moon, The Promised Land, Queen Jane Approximately, The Race Is On, Ramble On Rose, Row Jimmy, Rosa Lee McFall, Saint of Circumstance, Scarlet Begonias, Ship of Fools, Simple Twist of Fate, Sing Me Back Home, So Many Roads, Stagger Lee, Stella Blue, Supplication, Tangled Up In Blue, Tennessee Jed, They Love Each Other, Till The Morning Comes, To Lay Me Down, Turn On Your Lovelight, U. S. Blues, Victim or the Crime, Walkin' Blues, Wang Dang Doodle, Way to go Home, We Can Run, Weather Report I, Weather Report Suite Part II: Let it Grow, Weather Report Suite Prelude, Wharf Rat, The Wheel, When I Paint My Masterpiece, and When Push Comes to Shove.

Granted, they haven't shown any tendencies to play songs that Brent and Vince sang/wrote, but that would only drop this list down to about 90 MAJOR unplayed songs. And anybody who has ever looked at the complete Grateful Dead songbook would know that I left out over half of the songs that they have performed through the years!

Adam asked why Warren sang so many songs. Simple answer: According to the things that the band has said, "The Dead" is NOT a four-piece band with two supporting musicians; it is a SIX MEMBER band. That means that Jeff and Warren are both FULL MEMBERS OF THE BAND and are being treated by Bobby, Phil, Mickey, and Billy as equals. Remember--"The Dead" is a separate musical entity from "The Grateful Dead."

best second set ive ever seen
the terrapin was defiantly the high point. there wasnt one stop all second set, it was one dense thick swamp of jam
download this show
amazing

Come on guys. 2nd set sucked! I can't believe people are actual giving that a good review. First set was great, but 2 songs before drums>space, Days Between out of space, Bird Song reprise, Sat Night closer, J. B. Goods encore. That is the recipe for a shitty set. Been to over 150 shows and that was one of the worst sets I have ever seen in 25 years. Hopefully better shows ahead...

Jon, Boston, MA
Detractors, please. This is the Dead and we're privileged to still be hearing and more importantly SEEING the trippyness that is a Dead show. As has been mentioned earlier, the Worst(ter) Centrum is an abomination. Truesters knew that going in and didn't drink a ton of beer (too painful). Althea and Terrapin worth the outrageous price of admission. Seeing them at MSG next Sat. so will be back with my humble opinion.

Rod Hardener, Boston
i have to sy the guys sound good, and the set was cool, save that scarlet fire for hartford, jen the dead are not top 40

jeff, ct
Excellent show. We knew that China->Rider hadn't dropped yet, and we were very happy to catch it. It was also heavily-favored by the other poor souls in the insanely awful bathroom line I was in pre-show. Anyway, that annoyance aside, it capped off a fantastic first set.

Set II was just as good. A fun, long dancing and a great Milestones had the energy level high for Lady w/ a fan -> terrapin, which was fantastic. Drums was excellent, and space was nice. Finishing birdsong with the "reprise" isn't a great way to describe the second half of the set though- it just was really another extended and enjoyable jam that the band had been pulling in just about every song all night.

To those without valid criticisms of the show, I would say that I suppose if, when you hear them play a song that doesn't include a raging crescendo or lyrics you know from "best of", that ruins the show for you, then maybe you should reconsider going to concerts. You could start going to Billy Joel shows. I dunno.

I just feel bad for the guys in seats nearby who always have to listen to you people ask them to sit down, or be generally miserable.

Marc, I think lady with a Fan is properly distinguished in setlists from Terrapin. Off the top of my head I have dick's #3 as a lady-free terrapin, but I also am pretty sure that Lady" has been played without Terrapin at least once in the 80s. Anyway, it's not a huge thing, and I mostly like to write it out because it's one of my personal favorites.

Great night.

KT, Boston, MA
All in all a good show, although I gotta say I thought the second set dragged a little bit, with the exception of Terrapin Station, which was cosmic... really though, a Bird Song reprise? eh I guess I can't really complain...

anyway Dupree's and the China>Rider were the highlights for me in the first set. Beautiful!

Okay, I've read the reviews, and first of all I'm baffled and amused that some of you are even describing the same show I was at. We all experience the universe differently I guess. For all you that panned Saturday night's show, I sure wish you could've experienced in from inside my head!

Let me tell you about where I live. I love dancing to Grateful Dead music. Its one of the things that makes me happy to be alive. I'm one of those crazy people dancing in the hallways. Always have been. I'm not one that obsesses over set lists. I mean, of course, there are some songs that I like more than others, and some that lend themselves to the kind of jams I like. But, as long as the boys are really cooking, I don't care that much what songs they play. I once read a first person account of one of the Acid Tests (Sunset Strip, I think) and apparently they played Midnight Hour all night long. And I bet it was incredible. As far as this deadhead is concerned, they're welcome to play one song as long as they like, as long as they're riding that magic dragon and I get to cling on to the tail. Let 'er rip, boys!

Having said that, the first set did contain some of my favorite dance tunes, Stranger, GDTRFB, China Cat, and yes, Bird Song. The people that are complaining that the songs were 'too jammy' are apparently not aware of the band's background. Its what they do. If you don't care for that kind of thing, then go see a different band.

I was literally in heaven during the first set, it was EXACTLY what I hope for every time I go to a dead show. I was wearing cut-off shorts and a t-shirt, both dripping with sweat, as I danced my ass off. *ahhhh...* :)

About the venue. I agree the Centrum has hallways that are smaller than most, especially with the amount of vending going on, so its really hard to move around at times like pre-show, setbreak, space, etc. But, as an avid hallway dancer, one of the things I love about the Centrum is that they don't cut off access to the inside, so you can hear the music pretty well from the hallway. For instance, in Hartford they have doors between the hallway and the arena, which makes hallway dancing very difficult if not impossible. And, at the Centrum, they're not uptight about people dancing in the aisles or hallways. Like I've pointed out, that's what I care about the most, finding good spots to dance.

The bathroom situation was indeed ridiculous, four heads per restroom is ridiculous. But I wasn't affected by it, for the most part. I sweat so much when I dance that I rarely have to pee during a show. And I drank about six large lemonades each night. The second night, the girl working the lemonade stand was a real sweetheart and let me drink for free all night. :)

And I've got to agree with Jeff, NH, that the Worcester PD were the coolest I've ever seen them. Back in the day (damn, I sure sound old when I say that!) I couldn't set foot in Worcester without getting fucked with by the cops. And its not like I was a bad boy, looking for trouble, or anything. I was always a pretty well behaved hippie. Didn't matter. They just flat out did not like deadheads. I guess times have changed. At one point I even saw some guys slinging gas on a street corner next to the lot, not 30 feet from an idling squad car. Didn't care. Wow. I don't even do drugs any more, haven't for years, but apparently you folks that do had no worries in Worcester this year. Open containers and balloons everywhere and no hassles.

And I'm an old friend of nelliechatham, another veteran of many shows who posted above. I was texting her while the first set was going on and she was listening on Sirius. We were both in the process of being completely blown away, and I so wished she could've been there. But, I had a ton of fun dancing with her and her adorable little daughter Sunday night.

David Eoll, Exeter, NH
first set was pretty good. hats off to warren as he made no attempt to be jerry, placing his mark on every song. the second set lanquished at times but rocked out at the end.

sad to say that this tour seems more about money than anything else. $100 per ticket is an outrageous soaking of a loyal fan base.

for me, this was probably my last show. the real dead died with jerry

bob a, central mass
First, I have to say that all in all, the boys are playing very tight and who else would you want to play instead of Warren? He is the best out there to fit in with this band. After seeing some of the other set lists, I was somewhat dissapointed with this set list. It's like they just pulled songs out of a hat and said OK that will do. The show lacked direction in my opinion compared to Sunday which was fantastic. I have been doing this for 33 years and there are just some songs I like better. If I never hear another Birdsong, that's fine with me. After drums, to hear The Days Between and then back to Birdsong was a little depressing for a Sat night. It's great to hear them but I would have rather just listened to this show from home and saved $220. and a night in a hotel. Sunday was killer.
